For the Piazzolla album "Variations on Buenos Aires", which will be released by Berlin Classics on 28 January 2022, the Dutch violinist Isabelle van Keulen has brought together two different ensembles - her own ensemble specialising in tango nuevo and the Deutsche Kammerakademie Neuss, which she artistically directs. A special chance that allows the music of Astor Piazzolla to be heard in a new way due to its unusual combination of tango ensemble and string orchestra.

Tango has long become more than the popular Argentine urban dance which developed after 1870 in the poor working class and immigrant areas on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. Tango has aficionados worldwide – be it for its music, culture or the dance. On New Year’s Eve 2006, conductor and pianist Daniel Barenboim, Argentinean by birth and upbringing, celebrated the end of the year with a spectacular musical event: a festival of Argentinean music live from Buenos Aires. In a seamless fusion of classical and traditional music, the Orquesta Filarmónica de Buenos Aires under Barenboim joined the excellent bandoneon virtuoso Leopoldo Federico and his Orquesta Tipica to present an extraordinary show with popular tangos and Latin American orchestra classics to a crowd of 10,000 in a free open-air concert at the Plaza de la República.

As titled, Reflejos Migrantes (Migrant Reflections) can be read literally as referencing the tango quartet makeup led by Buenos Aires-born, Paris-based pianist-composer Gerardo Jerez Le Cam. But this is music infiltrated by a more profound figurative connotation, the transformation of Western European culture and demography following the Soviet Union's demise, and errant U.S. adventure in the Balkans, Middle East and North Africa since the 1990s.
