This 1964 studio session features the Peterson trio with bassist Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen, a group that had been together for five years by then and performed like a well-oiled machine.

Oscar Peterson’s trio with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen is widely regarded as Peterson’s “classic trio,” considered by fans as the most popular and in-demand of his long and storied career (featured on releases such as 1963’s Night Train and 1964’s We Get Requests). Recorded during their creative peak in 1964 (5 years into their collaboration), this previously unheard and unreleased live performance is destined to become a fan favorite from the Oscar Peterson vaults. In his memoir Peterson reflects on the dedication that Ray and Ed brought to the group:

To mark the ninetieth anniversary of the legendary jazz pianist Oscar Peterson's birth, Peterson's widow, Kelly Peterson, produced a tribute album for the ages: Oscar, with Love, a marvelous three-disc set comprising ten never-before-recorded Peterson compositions, nineteen of his better-known works and seven compositions written especially for him, performed by sixteen contemporary piano masters on Peterson's personal Boesendorfer Imperial piano at his private studio in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.

The album "Oscar Peterson Trio - Live at the Tivoli Gardens May 29th. 1965 (Restauración 2023)" features a live performance by the renowned jazz pianist Oscar Peterson and his trio. The concert was held at the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark, on May 29, 1965, and has been restored in 2023 for enhanced audio quality.

Within a one-month period the Oscar Peterson Trio (with bassist Ray Brown and their new drummer Ed Thigpen) recorded nine different Songbook, 108 selections in all. Not too surprisingly, this music had a minimum of prior planning and few arranged passages, putting it on a lower level than the typical music played by Peterson's prior trio with guitarist Herb Ellis. The 12 numbers performed for the Jerome Kern album are given melodic and consistently swinging treatments with such songs as 'I Won't Dance,' 'The Song Is You,' and 'Pick Yourself Up' among the better selections heard on this pleasing program.

Oscar Peterson's series of recordings for Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer during the 1960s and early '70s are one of many high points in his long career.
