Oum Kalthoum – Ahl El Hawa

Quand elle disparaît, le 3 février 1975, des millions d'Égyptiens suivent son cortège funèbre, comme ils l'avaient fait quinze mois plus tôt après la mort du président Nasser. Le retentissement, là encore, est planétaire. Aucune chanteuse n'a été adulée à l'égale d'Oum Kalthoum, aucune voix, si belle soit-elle, n'a incarné comme elle l'âme de tout un peuple, au point d'être sacralisée de son vivant, non seulement en Égypte, mais dans tout le monde arabe. "Au-dessus d’elle, il n’y a que le Coran", résumait le journaliste Mustapha Amin, l'un de ses amis.

This book examines a group of twelve ancient Egyptian tombs (ca. 2300 BCE) in the elite Old Kingdom cemetery of Elephantine at Qubbet el-Hawa in modern Aswan. It develops an interdisciplinary approach to the material - drawing on methods from art history, archaeology, anthropology, and sociology, including agency theory, the role of style, the reflexive relationship between people and landscape, and the nature of locality and community identity.

Ibrahim Maalouf, born in Beirut and now residing in Paris, is a virtuoso of the quarter-tone trumpet, which enables him to work with the maqam, or system of melodic modes, in traditional Arabic music. He and his carefully selected powerhouse band pay tribute to one of the greatest Arabic divas of all time, Oum Kalthoum.
