The Choir of New College Oxford is one of the world's foremost choral foundations. The music composed for it in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries thus provides a compelling historical tour of changing musical styles and liturgical practices. This album, which follows the choir's Sheppard recording (Gramophone Editor's Choice), surveys New College commissions and premieres from the 1920s to the 2020s, beginning with Sir William Harris's evergreen Faire is the heaven, composed while he was Organist of New College, and ending with a trio of recent commissions from contemporary English composers Caitlin Harrison, Deborah Pritchard and Toby Young. For Kenneth Leighton's heart-wrenching cantata Crucifixus pro nobis, written in 1961, the choir is joined by tenor Nick Pritchard, a former academical clerk at New College.

The songs in this collection span a period of over four hundred years, yet they show a fundamental unity of style which illustrates how static a genre based in a tradition of apparently untrained music-making necessarily remained. Tudor court composers conjure up an Arcadian world of innocence, while later works often derive from indigenous folk-songs. Either way, the secular song packages and sanitises a dangerous world of rustic abandon for an audience more restrictively cultured.

In the stillness of a midnight stable, a babe is born … In the stillness of an Oxford chapel on a winter’s afternoon, a girl’s voice sings. The newest star in Oxford’s – and Delphian’s – choral firmament, the girl choristers of Merton College have been singing services under the directorship of Benjamin Nicholas for less than five years: in their debut album recording, supported by the lower voices of the Chapel Choir, they tell once more in music from across the centuries the timeless Christmas story of light, hope and joy for a troubled world.

Born into a musical family in Wales in 1572, Thomas Tomkins became one of the most significant church musicians in England during the 17th century. In his mature years he shared his time between his duties as Choral Master at Worcester Cathedral and organist of the King's Chapel in London, and was regarded among the outstanding organists of his time. His madrigals were the most important in the English school of composition, and among his considerable output was included over 120 anthems, many of his outstanding works included in this disc of Tomkins' highlights.

He first conducted at the age of 15, and after finishing school he studied at King's College, Cambridge. While still an undergraduate, he conducted the combined Oxford and Cambridge Singers on a 1964 tour of the Middle East and founded the Monteverdi Choir, which has consistently performed on his recordings since.

This release celebrates the 300th anniversary of Handel's great Brockes-Passion: a long-neglected masterpiece by this most brilliant composer. Richard Egarr and the Academy of Ancient Music are joined by a stellar line-up of soloists in this recording, the culmination of two years of scholarly research. To create its new edition of the score (Handel's original being long-lost), the Academy of Ancient Music assembled a team of scholars and musicologists from the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, King's College London and more, to work alongside Music Director Richard Egarr and editor Leo Duarte.
