In Memoriam: Hugh Masekela (1939–2018). South African jazz trumpeter Hugh Masekela died on January 23, 2018, at the age of 78 after a long battle with cancer. I was briefly introduced to South African Jazz by watching the HBO series, The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. Some of the scenes took place inside local jazz clubs in Botswana. So when I saw this album, I decided to give it a try. What a wonderful surprise! The music is unique and distinct, but a close listen will give hints of American Jazz artists, such as George Benson or Herbie Hancock. This album is my new favorite.

Within the life of New York-based vocalist Risa Branch, her sophomore album I Thought About You signifies a meaningful turning point. After years of refining her chops and musical sensitivity within the vibrant independent music scene of Vancouver, British Columbia, Risa’s new album demonstrates that she is a woman ready to embrace, with her own original flair, the intimacy and dynamism for which vocal jazz is best known. While those who have followed Risa’s musical emergence will remember the futuristic R&B and soul sounds of her solo debut, I Thought About You is the expression of a more confident artist, one whose past experiences have prepared her to join the jazz idiom with sincerity, authenticity and sophistication.

This 1990 release is one of DeJohnette's finest. A trio recording, PARALLEL REALITIES showcases the talents of Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheny, as well as the highly acclaimed drummer. All three of these players should require no formal introduction to jazz aficionados. However, first time listeners will be impressed by the playing ability of these three jazz icons.

Most people believe that growing up and getting older goes hand in hand with acquiring more knowledge and wisdom. It may be comforting to think that life teaches you things, and there is often some truth to it. However, to me, there is also a parallel, deeper reality at work.

Hebden recently revealed that he and Madlib had finished work on the reclusive producer’s solo album Solo Ancestors, sharing the single “Road of the Lonely Ones.” He teamed with Thom Yorke and Burial for a pair of songs—“Her Revolution” and “His Rope”—earlier this month.

"Parallel Motion" — the new album from jazz fusion legends Yellowjackets — is a true testament to the longevity and resilience of a band who debuted over 40 years ago. Consistently reinventing themselves through elevated instrumentation in their signature electro-acoustic soundscape, the current lineup consisting of Bob Mintzer (tenor & soprano saxophone/EWI), Russell Ferrante (piano/keyboards), Will Kennedy (drums, keyboards) and Dane Alderson (electric bass, MIDI Sequencing) showcases a collective at their prime. This album features 9 new original compositions and guest vocalist Jean Baylor (4x GRAMMY® Award Nominee of the Baylor Project and R&B duo Zhané) on “If You Believe."

Blondie turned to British pop producer Mike Chapman for their third album, on which they abandoned any pretensions to new wave legitimacy (just in time, given the decline of the new wave) and emerged as a pure pop band…

Parallel Dreams, the Canadian harpist/songwriter's quietly moving sophomore release, finds the mystical red-haired siren in true balladeer form. By far McKennitt's most romantic venture – the liner notes describe the project's central theme as a "yearning toward love, liberty and integration" – Dreams is more ambitious than her sparse, impeccably recorded debut, Elemental, tripling the amount of players and laying the groundwork for the immense scope she would go on to attain on future recordings. The heartbreaking trio of "Standing Stones," "Annachnie Gordon," and "Dickens' Dublin" – the latter features an effective radio-show sample of an unnamed Irish school child detailing the birth of Christ – stand among the artist's finest works, and the range and clarity of her voice is undeniably powerful. Parallel Dreams was an emotional and career-turning point for McKennitt, as her next recording would be the major-label spectacle The Visit.
