Roland Kirk, the amazing one-man saxophone section and sublime soloist, had yet to add "Rahsaan" to his name when he recorded his first album for Prestige in 1961. It wasn't yet quite clear to many, even people at the center of the jazz community, that Kirk's gifts went considerably beyond the ability to play three horns at once. Gradually, it began to dawn on one and all that the man's almost superhuman energy and dedication were matched by musicianship based as firmly in tradition as in innovation.

Pat Martino - Think Tank (2003)

Jazz, Guitar | APE, CUE | archive contains recovery record | 408,7 Mb | Covers, booklet |

Personnel: Pat Martino (guitar); Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone); Gonzalo Rubalcaba (piano); Christian McBride (bass); Lewis Nash (drums).

Recorded at the Sony Studios, New York, New York in January 2003. Includes liner notes by Bela Fleck. THINK TANK was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. "Africa" was nominated for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. Despite a serious condition in the late 1970s that left him with the sketchiest of memories of his past, Pat Martino rehabilitated his life and his formidable career with superhuman determination. Claiming that the people his music attract–players, students, fans–are ultimately what is important to him, and that his chosen instrument is "just an apparatus," this guitar master re-learned his instrument from his own earlier recordings and climbed back to the top of his game. Martino's considerable musical palette includes Coltrane (they met through the legendary teacher Dennis Sandole), Tristano, modalism, and, finally, ersatz
psychedelia, which in his oeuvre, often stands in for balladry (yes, Pat likes to play fast). On THINK TANK, he is joined by a group of New York-based players with enough cache to make any producer greedily rub their hands together in anticipation.
This music, largely Martino originals, combines a floating lyricism with sharp, clean-cut corners. Worthy contributions come from the solid rhythm section of Christian McBride and Lewis Nash and the driving, uncompromising solos of Gonzalo Rubalacaba and Joe Lovano.

This two-fer brings together two key Gary Burton Quartet works of the the late '60s. After 1967's Duster, the Quartet went on to collaborate with composer Carla Bley on A Genuine Tong Funeral, a quirky, mordant jazz "opera" that owes as much to Kurt Weill as to Charles Mingus. Besides Burton, guitarist Larry Coryell, and bassist Steve Swallow, the free-spirited drummer Bob Moses makes his appearnce, having replaced veteran Roy Haynes. Other Bley stalwarts include saxophonists Gato Barbieri and Steve Lacy, who pop in and out of the vivid cartoon-like musical narrative.

Genre: Jazz, Rock, Blues, Folk, World, & Country | Label: Blue Note

Veteran Pat Martino is teamed up with a variety of different fellow guitarists on this interesting if not quite essential release. Martino matches wits with guitarist Charlie Hunter (who on Stevie Wonder's "Too High" often sounds like an organist), Tuck Andress, Kevin Eubanks, Les Paul ("I'm Confessin'"), Mike Stern and Michael Hedges. In addition, Cassandra Wilson sings Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" accompanied by Martino, and rock guitarist Joe Satriani tries to sit in on two numbers (with indifferent results). A decent effort, but not up to Pat Martino's most significant releases.

Pat Martino excited the jazz community with his exciting reentry into the scene in 1987 with his live recording, The Return. He surprised more than a few by demonstrating such impressive taste and technique, almost as if he had never lost the ability to play the guitar due to a severe brain aneurysm. Perhaps almost as surprising was his disappearance once again from the public eye (due to his parents' illnesses), until he reemerged with this recording in 1994. Here, Martino is teamed with pianist James Ridl, whom he happened upon in a Philadelphia club. Martino was so impressed and inspired that he invited the pianist to form a musical partnership.
