Leon "Ndugu" Chancler was an American pop, funk and jazz drummer. He was also a composer, producer, and university professor. Chancler began playing drums when he was thirteen years old. He would publicly reminisce about being asked to leave a classroom for continuously tapping on the desk, only to be later heard tapping on the poles in the hallway. His love for the drums took over while attending Gompers Junior High School and it became his lifelong ambition. He graduated from Locke High School having been heavily involved in playing there with Willie Bobo and the Harold Johnson Sextet. He graduated from California State University, Dominguez Hills with a degree in music education. By then he had already performed with the Gerald Wilson Big Band, Herbie Hancock, and recorded with Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, and Bobby Hutcherson.

Still relatively unknown nearing the end of the 1970s, this talented violinist turned to George Duke to produce, arrange and hopefully reach some ears. The result for the most part is enjoyable but unremarkable jazz-pop-soul. On tunes like "The Red Planet," though, he's right there with the glory days of Mahavishnu Orchestra and Billy Cobham. It suggests what might have been for White before Jean-Luc Ponty staked out the high ground on the jazz violin landscape.

The Definitive Groove Collection amounts, roughly, to a combination of two older Rhino compilations: 1994's Stellar Fungk: The Best of Slave and 2003's Party Lights: More of the Best. With a couple minor exceptions, it contains all of Slave's charting singles (such as "Slide," "Just a Touch of Love," and "Watching You") as well as several spectacular tracks that never hit the charts ("Party Lites," "Steal Your Heart," and "I'll Be Gone," just to name a handful). As with its predecessors, this two-disc set also contains some but not all of the notable material released by Steve Arrington and his Hall of Fame ("Feel So Real," "Dancin' in the Key of Life," "Way Out"). Covering all the bases with Slave and its various spinoffs (Steve Arrington's Hall of Fame, Aurra, Young & Company, Starleana) within two discs would be impossible, but this is the most comprehensive and helpfully annotated Slave anthology released to date.
