Two Spanish sax giants back to back in a seriously fascinating set of all-original compositions which embraces both the avant-garde and the old school. Inspired by latin rhythms, Vercher, on tenor sax, relishes free playing for its unpredictability and intuitiveness and the instant rapport with his fellow player, Sambeat, who gives an emotional gravity and a palpable sense of spirituality on alto sax. The feeling of discovery is present all around the record that also features Andrew Hill’s drummer Eric McPherson and bass player Edward Perez.

Fresh Sound New Talent series features emerging artists mainly from New York or Barcelona. The label produced the debut recordings of Brad Mehldau, a key figure on today’s world stage. Having formerly released the Mehldau-Rossy Trio “When I Fall in Love”. In these two CDs the trio joined the Spanish altoist Perico Sambeat. The quartet confidently stretches out in a variety of tempos and feels, captured live at the Jamboree Club in Barcelona in 1993.

The good news for connoisseurs of music that is as surprising as Jazz, mysterious as flamenco and the molten mix of these with every other musical idiom, is that Colina Miralta Sambeat – otherwise known as the CMS Trio – has released just their first album of 2015. The repertoire is driven by music that is sinuous, lyrical and magical. And there could hardly be a trio of musicians that created this music and is more self-effacing, scholarly and so filled with ingenuity that their proverbial cup does runneth over. And it does so with the simple joy of playing alto saxophone, contrabass and percussion with compelling brilliance so as to communicate through extreme virtuosity, the simple joy of traversing the musical topography of the world with the eyes and ears of children.

Una formación que ha sido base de muchos proyectos de jazz y otros estilos como el flamenco o la música cubana. Su estreno discográfico fue en marzo de 2007 en el Festival Jazz Terrassa. Desde entonces el grupo ha tenido un recorrido imparable en 2007 y 2008 que le ha llevado a estar presente en ciudades como Madrid, Barcelona, Burgos, Huesca, Londres, Paris, Frankfurt, Montevideo o Buenos Aires.

A sampler as a taster for latest releases of a label are nothing unusual. ACT boss Siegfried Loch has however the ambition with his own label’s sampler to "get the information about new releases across in a manner which also provides pleasure to the listener". A sound adventure with a high chance of new discoveries are always key to ACT World Jazz anthologies - but they must give enjoyment to the listener.
