Magazine's three-disc box set is a mess. Breaking the group's history down to two eras spread across the first two-thirds of the box and adding a fantastic and well-needed third disc dedicated solely to Peel Sessions, it's yet another multi-disc package that half-pleases both fan and neophyte. Only four of the 45 tracks come directly from the band's four studio LPs. Oddly enough, seven-tenths of the decent live album Play is strewn across the first two discs.

Compiling music from the first 2 series' of the hit Sky Atlantic TV show, Fortitude, Ben Frost has brought his chilling soundtrack for the show to a commercial release. Press (Guardian) 'Frost's fears were allayed by a treatment sent him by the show's creator, Simon Donald. "His fascination with the strangeness of the natural world and how it informed the writing resonated with me. I was cautiously excited." Dovetailing with the on-screen intrigue, Frost's work is by turns urgent, unsettling and alarming. "I was probably subconsciously trying to get out of it when I said it should be built around choral music, but nobody asked me to leave the meeting," he says.'

Paleowolf is the side project of Scorpio V of Metatron Omega.
A prehistoric journey from before civilization made it's mark on the world. Archaic drums echo through the riparian forests. Thick smoke from bonfires snake their way over charred and painted skulls, the spoils of war from opposing tribes. Distant sounds of the forest paints the canvas of a world untouched by modern man. The paleolithic shamans chant powerful over the tribal drums as ancient man rises from prey to predator. The night is young and the feral hunt is about to begin.

In the sound of the Roman artists, fragments of classical music blend with field recordings of every kind, voices and found sounds are manipulated, sampled and remixed, converting them in new frames and timbres likely to evoke rest and silence typical of the extensive glacial vastnesses. 3 years after his first full length CD, Netherworld comes back with this new work titled "Over the Summit," in which enclosed memories, feelings, and past experiences, deeply lived during the years and surrounded by an almost deafening silence, can be heard and felt circling vast mountains’ snowy peaks.
The underlined aspect is the sensation of peacefulness or contemplation of an uncontaminated and silent nature, wrapped in the winter’s white blanket…

Don’t go in negative. Don’t be reactionary. Don’t hate it just because it’s different. That’s what I told myself when approaching Skeletonwitch‘s risky black metal debut. After Kool-Aid Man-ing onto the scene with 2007’s Beyond the Permafrost,1 the Ohioans immediately moved away from their progressive roots. Indecision between kinetics and construction forced Breathing the Fire into an awkward love triangle before the hyper-streamlined apex of Forever Abomination and follow-up Serpents Unleashed ultimately chose the riffs and with it a plateau. With vocalist Chance Garnette’s unceremonious departure and nowhere to go but sideways, all signs pointed to a long surrender to Angry Metal Guy’s Law of Diminishing Recordings™. Devouring Radiant Light, in this context, makes perfect sense. Good luck explaining that to their rabid fanbase.

From the perennial layers of the permafrost, Glacial Movements brings out the music of the talented Dutch artist Amandus Schaap aka Equal Stones. From the first experimental outing - exploring the possibilities of production work in 2012's "Temporal Displacement", the project Equal Stones has always been about getting to know the hidden places within the subconscious. Progressing over the years and finding a consistent stylistic sound on the two LP's "Transgression" and "Hans of a Murderer" the project turned towards very textural induced drone ambient, in which it's still firmly rooted.

"Overall, the composer here who shall remain anonymous raises the roof here with “Empathica” to impossible heights. He is very structured in the way he composes the music but that is nearly preposterous when you consider the amount of layers he uses along with the sheer number of different instruments. Gorgeous melodies abound…to the point that is nearly overwhelms you. I haven’t been moved by an album like this so far in 2020, and at nearly half way through the year it has to be mentioned as a contender for album of the year."
