Saxophonist Stephen Riley and pianist Peter Zak made their first duo release on 'Haunted Heart' (SCCD31806) in 2015, to critical and public acclaim. 'Deuce' is the follow up recording by the empathic twosome. Stephen Riley started his recording career with SteepleChase in 2005 with an amazing (and unusual) piano-less trio album 'Inside Out' (SCCD31584). Since then he had more often than not opted for the piano-less format until he recorded his 2013 quartet release 'Lover' (SCCD31765) with Peter Zak on piano.

The release of a new recording from La Morra is always exciting in terms of creative and imaginative artistry and not just within the realms of late medieval and early Renaissance music. With a disc focusing on the 15th-century composer Petrus Wilhelmi de Grudencz, in a production from the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis strand on Glossa, the ensemble is set to repeat its happy knack of alighting upon an area of largely untravelled repertoire and making a fascinating programme from it.

In May 2014 the Hungarian cellist István Várdai performed three Bach Suites at an unusual venue in New York: not the storied glamour of Carnegie Hall or the hip 92st St Y, but the Board of Officers Room in the recently renovated Armory on Park Avenue, a room no less redolent of distinguished history: to which he made his own distinguished contribution according to the New York Times, with a recital which concluded with a ‘superb’ performance of the Sixth Suite.

Friederike Chylek, born in Starnberg, began playing the piano and the recorder at age seven. Whilst still attending secondary school in Stockdorf and Gräfelfing, she began her artistic edu-cation in Munich with the harpsichordist Michael Eberth. Start-ing in the year 2000, she studied harpsichord and figured bass at the world renowned Schola Cantorum Basiliensis with pro-fessors including Jesper Christensen, with Rudolf Lutz (historical improvisation) and Edoardo Torbianelli (fortepiano).

This is an exceptionally accomplished debut recording from cellist Laura van der Heijden, winner of BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2012. It includes Soviet composers’ irritated and defiant responses to the Communist regime’s 1948 decree on what they could write. Prokofiev’s 1949 Sonata is a blistering, angry work, performed here with passion and guts. Myaskovsky’s 1948 Sonata, which, ironically, went on to win the Stalin Prize, harks back to the Romantic age—the richness and depth of van der Heijden’s tone is a thing to behold. The final, melancholy Lyadov Prelude is an aching portrait of Russian despair.
