"That's What I Heard" is the title of Robert Cray's new album for 2020. The US-American blues guitarist and singer and five-time Grammy winner presents the successor of "Robert Cray & Hi Rhythm" from 2017.

Rising bassist Alexander Claffy delivers a full stream of his self-titled debut CLAFFY LP, out now via Ropeadope Records. The project from The New School alum boasts five original compositions and a striking take on the celebrated standard “I’ll Be Seeing You.” Billed as “a deeply personal story of heartbreak,” the 9-track release features Sonny Step on vocals, Victor Gould on piano, Michael King on organ and keys, Benny Benack III on trumpet, Ben Eunson on guitar, Matt Chalk and Troy Roberts on saxophone, Kyle Poole and Jonathan Barber on drums and David Gibson on trombone. When deciding on the repertoire for his début recital, James Newby’s first choice fell on An die ferne Geliebte, songs that he had been performing ever since the beginning of his career. But Beethoven’s song cycle – and perhaps even more so the quasi-operatic Adelaide – also sets a tone for the entire programme, that of longing and of wanting to be elsewhere, near the distant beloved. These are emotions that Schubert, perhaps more than any other composer, has plumbed in depth, and Newby went on to select five of his songs that in various ways depict the restlessness and loneliness of the eternal wanderer.Mahler is another composer who knew something about longing – for instance that it can be deadly, which he demonstrated with his Zu Straßburg auf der Schanz, in which a soldier awaits execution after trying to desert to his homeland while the piano imitates the muffled rolling of drums.

Saxophonist Troy Roberts blends imagination, energy and ambition to make music that is highly creative. This is his 12th album and his performances have gained awards and high praise from critics as well as audiences. The album features all original compositions with an element not yet showcased on Roberts’ previous albums; the collection in nature is an ensemble album, only this time recorded with Roberts helming multiple soprano, alto and tenor saxophones, as well as acoustic and electric basses, along with Jimmy MacBride on drums. As Troy states, “My first compositional rule of thumb is to capture my ideas by singing them into my phone. Every so often, I transcribe and save them to a folder on my hard drive called ‘Stuff I Heard’ for later development. All my albums are essentially the fruits of these seeds”.
