This is one colossal hit-laden collection with 20 US and UK chart entries including Rebel Rouser, Cannonball, Peter Gunn, Yep, Forty Miles Of Bad Road, Some Kinda Earthquake, Shazam!, and Because They're Young. There are 148 tracks including Eddy's first recording, Soda Fountain Girl by Jimmy (Delbridge) and Duane, pre-Jamie versions of Ramrod and Caravan and a clutch of rare vocal tracks by other artists all of which feature Eddy's unmistakeable low-down fretwork. Obsessive fans will relish the alternative takes in various overdubbed states and the fine array of items which were unissued prior to the first release of this magnificent collection in 1994.
The second recording and first studio set by the L.A. Four matched together Bud Shank on alto and flute, guitarist Laurindo Almeida, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Shelly Manne for a diverse yet consistently enjoyable program. The selections range from "Dindi" and "Manteca" to "St. Thomas" and a 13-minute exploration of "Concierto de Aranjuez." As usual, the band mixes together bossa nova and Brazilian jazz, some touches of classical music, and cool-toned bop. Recommended as a strong example of the group's appealing sound.
Even amidst the already seedy underbelly of the late-'80s L.A. glam metal scene, L.A. Guns were the undisputed bottom-feeders. A ragged collection of outcasts from various other bands (guitarist Tracii Guns was the original "guns" in Guns n' Roses, drummer Steven Riley had recently vacated the stool with shock-kings W.A.S.P., and British vocalist Phil Lewis had done time with London glamsters Girl), they elevated the unrepentant sleaziness and undeniable tackiness of their environment to a new VD-encrusted low. The union of such an unsavory cast of characters could only result in a wildly over-the-top rock & roll album, and while it may not have been as successful as their latest efforts, this eponymous debut rocked with a bile and fury not seen since Mötley Crüe's Shout at the Devil. Sh*t-kicking anthems like "No Mercy," "Sex Action," "One More Reason," and the marvelous "Bitch Is Back" slap the listener silly while still making room for slightly more commercial but equally hot offerings such as "Electric Gypsy" and "Down in the City".
