This is the second of two LPs recorded by Chick Corea shortly after he broke up the avant-garde quartet Circle, saying that he wanted to communicate to a larger audience. As with the first set, these brief sketches are melodic and a bit precious but contain some strong moments. In addition to seven Corea originals, he interprets Thelonious Monk's "Trinkle Tinkle" and Wayne Shorter's "Masquellero." Not essential but worth acquiring.

Contemporary instrumentalist Greg Maroney's solo piano compositions evoke wistful stories and images of the rural American countryside, in particular central Pennsylvania, where he resides with his wife and many animals. Maroney began studying both classical and jazz piano at age five and later, in the early '70s, studied classical Indian music as well. The pianist performs throughout the Pennsylvania area – at local restaraunts, radio stations, weddings, private parties, even the governor's mansion – and has also released a series of albums – Songs of the Water Rose (1997), Copper Hat (2001), Sentinel (2002) – all of which feature original compositions.

After spending a year with the avant-garde quartet Circle, Chick Corea's desire to communicate to a wider audience led to him deciding to break up the unit. His first post-Circle recordings were two LPs of piano solos. Vol. 1 features six of his originals including the eight sketches of "Where Are You Now?," and the debut of the future standard "Sometime Ago." These performances are sometimes a bit precious, but they succeed in being acccessible and serve as a transition between Circle and Return to Forever.

Three CD box set of Chick Corea’s piano music, reminding us that the distinguished solo piano tradition at ECM started in 1971 with Corea’s spontaneously-recorded volumes of improvisations and jazz tunes (all by Chick save for Monk’s “Trinkle, Tinkle” and Wayne Shorter’s “Masqualero”). The “Children’s Songs”, recorded in 1983, are finely-honed yet playful solo piano miniatures that can be related to the tradition of Bartók’s “Mikrokosmos” and Kurtág’s “Játékok”. Violinist Ida Kavafian and cellist Fred Sherry join Chick for an “Addendum”. Booklet includes liner notes by Chick Corea and Neil Tesser, plus archive photos.

Pulank: Piano Works Vol.1 "Entretiens avec Francis Poulenc" Pianist Makiko Suzumura, who received a doctorate from the Tokyo University of the Arts in the study of French composer Francis Poulanck, draws out the pearl of Poulanck: a collection of piano works with an intellectual musical approach and a fresh sensibility.Suzumura's pianism, which has a deep love for music and empathy, dances brilliantly, and delivers a kaleidoscopic world full of esprit-witty, humorous, elegant, sweet poison, and sadness-richly.

Mozart’s sonatas for the fortepiano cover a period from 1766 to 1791, with a significant number of mature sonatas written during the years in Vienna. The sonatas include much fine music, ranging from the slighter C major Sonata for beginners, K. 545, to the superb and more technically challenging B flat Sonata, K. 570. In addition to his sonatas he wrote a number of sets of variations, while his ephemeral improvisations in similar form are inevitably lost to us. The published works include operatic variations as well as a set of variations on the theme Ah, vous dirai-je, maman, known in English as ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star’.

The first volume in this series traced the inter-war craze for carefree dance music in Austria and the Czech Lands. This latest album focuses on Germany where jazz-influenced music flourished from the mid-1920s onwards even in the face of some social, political and racial opposition. Cabarets and dancehalls rejected this nationalist resistance and the Weimar Republic rejoiced in a cross-pollination of symphonic jazz and Kunstjazz - a fusion of dance and classical elements. The many previously unrecorded pieces here chart the progress of this vigorous musical rejuvenation.

Milton Keanes, pianist for the British trio Jazz Sabbath, first emerged in early 2020 claiming that his group's lost 1960s album had been plagiarized by heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath. In truth, Keanes is the alias of Adam Wakeman, longtime keyboardist for Ozzy Osbourne, and he came up with the idea for his fictional jazz combo while on a tour with Black Sabbath. The project's debut, a collection of Black Sabbath songs arranged for a jazz piano trio, appeared in 2020, followed by a second volume in 2022. In 2013, Adam Wakeman – son of legendary Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman – was on a European tour supplying the off-stage keyboard parts for metal icons Black Sabbath.
