Piano Works 1936–2000 Josef Tal, Ofra Yitzhaki

With this new program recorded for Artalinna in Metz in April 2023, Aline Piboule continues her original musical journeys by associating two unexpected composers, both genius pianists, Franz Liszt (1811-1886) and Olivier Greif (1950-2000), who each one carried out a powerful mystical journey during their existence. Of the two, it brings together two works as beautiful as they are complementary. From Liszt, Ballade No. 2 as then sublimated by Blessing of God in Solitude, coming from poetic and religious harmonies. From Greif, two Sonatas, among his most beautiful works, Three Poems of Li T’ai Po (1977) and the Codex Domini (1994), both played in the critical edition produced by Anne-Élise Thouvenin. Two pages of Bach open and end this recital, filled with grandiose and intense feelings.

Berit Johansen Tange trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen with the lecturer Anne Øland, and in the spring of 1995 studied in Paris with Brigitte Engerer. In 1997 she was admitted to the Royal Academy’s special class for pianists with the subjects chamber music and accompaniment (with Anne Øland and Tove Lønskov) and made her debut from there in December 2000.

Among the 32 Sonatas you will not find two that are similar; and in the 20 sets of Variations one marvels at the range and inspiration of his vision and imagination. Indeed, he was a rebel and he defined the course of classical music probably more than any other composer. He travelled fast and far, from the influence of Haydn and Mozart in his early works to his own idiomatic language of the middle period works and, finally, reached heights of great spiritual depth in the last 10 years or so. The works are presented in chronological order, but there are many instances where scholars cannot pin down the precise time of composition.
