The Aristocrats' 2014 world tour brought Guthrie Govan, Bryan Beller and Marco Minnemann to Japan where they performed at the 'Big Cat' club in Osaka. The show got recorded by Takashi Ogawa without the band's knowledge. When they heard the recording afterwards, they were impressed enough to release it as a double cd set. The recording does indeed sound excellent, and the show was great. An excellent decision to release it on album.
Besides his constant dedication for acoustic sound with his Trio and the Medium Ensemble, Pierre de Bethmann had the idea of a larger type of 4tet. Starting on very simple melodic ideas, the pianist / keyboardist / vocalist / whistler called one of his most talented keyboard mates and an amazing rhythmic pair, to develop things in layers, and make smart use of multi types of harmonic and rhythmic combinations. From hard groove to softer moments, the SHIFTERS offer a wide range of atmosphere, likely to evoke a world in permanent motion and reconstruction.
Fourth production of the ALEA label, second volume of Pierre de Bethmann’s ESSAIS, two years and nearly sixty concerts after the first volume was released in 2015. With Sylvain Romano on the double bass and Tony Rabeson on the drums, the trio pursues its journey, gleaning ideas from every new shared experience, continuing its exploration of a variety of musical traditions, subjecting each member’s choices to different arrangements, and above all to the spirit of the moment. The same spirit which led the three musicians back to the Recall Studio in June 2017 to record their new album, in a setup drawing each time closer to live conditions, in an exceptional setting capable of suspending time and capturing the raw energy of musicians only too eager to play.
