EARLY BROADCAST RECORDING FROM THE RECENTLY SINGLE ROBERT PLANT IN 1983 Following the demise of Led Zeppelin in December 1980, Robert Plant considered abandoning music in favour of teaching. He nevertheless embarked on a successful solo career, helped by encouragement from Genesis drummer Phil Collins, who would go on to play with Plant. Robert Plant's solo career began with the album Pictures at Eleven in 1982, followed by 1983's The Principle of Moments. The latter record featured the track Big Log , which became Plant s debut chart hit in territories worldwide. Following the strength of his first two releases, Plant launched a successful tour in 1983, which covered dates in the US and the UK. One of the finest shows performed on the tour was at London s Hammersmith Odeon on 12th December which, somewhat bravely for the singer, did not feature a single Led Zeppelin song. Even the introduction of special guest Jimmy Page, who joined Robert for the encore, didn t change things as the pair burst into a version of the old Elvis tune Treat Her Right , before the full band left the stage to understandably, frenzied screams of more . Recorded for live FM Radio Broadcast but previously unreleased, this superb gig is now available in its entirety for the first time on this 2CD set.

Evil Spirits was funded by a pledge campaign and produced by David Bowie's longtime and frequent collaborator Tony Visconti. “We deliberately recorded the album retro style – the same way our debut album was made, basically,” said guitarist Captain Sensible. “There’s something wonderful about the '70s sounds; glam, rock and punk records – they all sound so great, and Tony specializes in beautifully crafted old-school production. He had us all playing live, bashing it out in the same room with a focus on getting the initial band version of each song as close as possible to the finished thing.”

“This album is as much yours as it is ours,” says While She Sleeps’ Mat Welsh, hashing out a sentiment that explores how bands cannot exist in today’s industry without significant support through record sales, streams and successful attendance at live shows. But when the vocalist/guitarist articulates this over the phone, he means it in a far more heartfelt, substantial way than moving hundreds—even thousands—of copies in an album’s opening week. Welsh and his fellow bandmates simply couldn’t have made their upcoming album without fan support and input before the record’s creation. Rather than bank on the backing of a label, the U.K.-based metalcore group opted to take a risk and crowdfund the capital to self-release their upcoming 2017 full-length, You Are We. With four months left until the album is released, While She Sleeps fans alone have already helped the band achieve 133 percent of the pledge goal.

For his debut solo album, Robert Plant doesn't exactly succumb to everyone's expectations. With a less-potent vocal style, Plant manages to carry out most of the songs in smooth, stylish fashion while rocking out rather convincingly on a couple of others. He gets some pretty good help from guitarist Robbie Blunt, who truly comes to life on "Worse Than Detroit," and both Phil Collins and Cozy Powell give Plant enough of a solid background to lean his sultry yet surging rock voice against…

The West Coast's answer to The Last Poets, The Watts Prophets played an integral part in the raising of black consciousness and laying the foundations for rap. Formed at the Watts Writer's Workshop, Anthony "Amde" Hamilton, Otis O'Solomon, and Richard Dedeaux began performing together as Watts Prophets, setting their socially and politically conscious poetry to spare, often jazzy musical backing. They made high-profile guest appearances on Stevie Wonder's Songs In The Key of Life and Quincy Jones' Mellow Madness. And were later the subject of an Emmy-nominated documentary, Victory Will Be My Moan. In 1969, the group debuted with The Black Voices: On the Streets in Watts and, two years later, followed with Rappin' Black in a White World, which featured accompaniment by ex-Motown songwriter/pianist DeeDee McNeil. The radical, incendiary tone of their work fit right in with the emerging black power movement and attracted unfavorable notice from the government, with the home of the Watts Writers Project being destroyed by fire in 1975 after having been infiltrated by an FBI informant. Throughout the years, they've remained sporadically active as performers, and were rediscovered by the hip-hop generation as their records were sampled frequently by many hip-hop artists including Ice Cube, Digable Planets, and Coolio. The Watts Prophets remain dedicated community activists today, promoting creative self-expression and the arts to young people around Southern California and beyond. Two bonus tracks. Deluxe Arigato Pak! Water Records. 2005.

In the mid- to late '60s you couldn't get much further underground in the ever-expanding world of rock music than the Fugs – unless of course you were one of the Holy Modal Rounders, i.e. folk musicians Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber. The Rounders started out in the same early-'60s New York folk and jug scene as Ed Sanders and Tuli Kupferberg, and had crossed paths numerous times. Stampfel and Weber will be eternally remembered for "Bird Song," which was prominently featured in both the movie Easy Rider and its soundtrack.

Neil Young matches the fire in his belly to the poetry from his pen for one of the most gripping outings of his long career. This riveting collection, a spare acoustic-electric hybrid, seethes with righteous indignation over a plethora of social and political injustices, but also soothes with deeply felt empathy for those on the receiving end of iniquity. Most recently Young previewed five songs from the album during his performances during the Desert Trip Festival, in Indio, CA. last week which both Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly summed up as simply “explosive.” “Neil slashed and bashed at his guitar, the sound intense and nearly out of control. The Los Angeles Times called Young’s performance “intensely powerful,” “furious” and concluded, “combining passion, energy and stinging content, Young served up a deeply rewarding performance.
