Their very first appearance was a unique little trick that I hadn’t seen before: Porcupine Tree decided to feature an unannounced opening act… themselves. They performed a little acoustic set, five songs, and not all of them were the typical “sounds like the album version but a little slower.

Octane Twisted, the first album by Porcupine Tree in three years, is a double-live disc recorded at Chicago's Riviera in 2010 during The Incident tour. It also includes highlights from the band's concluding concert at London's Royal Albert Hall. Recording a concept album is fraught with danger as well as possibility; a touring one is an exponentially greater challenge – especially when the studio recording is a chart success. The Incident went Top 30 in both the United Kingdom and the United States.

A few days after filming the concert in The Netherlands that would later be released as Anesthetize, Porcupine Tree wound up a nine date mini tour (and the Fear of a Blank Planet album cycle), with this hometown show. At least two of the band are sick and there are some rough edges, but perhaps with the knowledge that the film is in the can, this spirited performance has a looser and more relaxed feel to other shows with similar repertoire from this period.

It gets tossed out the window almost immediately here. Opener "Occam's Razor" gives way to "The Blind House" easily enough, without interruption, but as the latter track concludes, Steven Wilson breaks the spell by greeting the crowd…
