Luminous and daring, this celebration of Héloïse Werner’s multifaceted gifts is nourished by rich dualities. Phrases reveals Werner as both singer and composer, as an artist shaped by both her native France and her adopted UK, and as a soloist of captivating individuality who is also an intrepid collaborator.

An international summit meeting, “Travel Guide” features US guitarist Ralph Towner, Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel, and Kazakhstan-born and Australia-raised guitarist Slava Grigoryan. Towner has been a key ECM recording artist for more than 40 years, while Muthspiel and Grigoryan make label debuts here. Grigoryan is well known as the preeminent Australian classical guitarist of his generation, and Muthspiel’s been an important figure on the transatlantic jazz scene for two decades, with his own bands and as a contributor to groups of Gary Burton, Paul Motian and many others. What all three guitarists share is a strong feeling for structure, a sense for lyrical improvisation and a feeling for space, harnessing instrumental technique to very graceful musical ends. Repertoire features five compositions by Towner, and five by Muthspiel.

This album is something we never thought possible when we played our first notes together a decade ago. It pushed us to the brink of our abilities, and forced us to find sounds and extended techniques we didn’t know existed. It challenged us emotionally, forcing us to confront our purpose as an ensemble after spending over a year apart in lockdown. More than anything, it revealed to us – in small, sacred moments — a world of possibility for the next decade and more.

It was around 1825 that Louise Bertin, pupil of Reicha and friend of Berlioz, tackled the subject of Faust with all the energy and confidence of a young woman of twenty. She entirely exceeded the public's expectations and won over the critics with her daring. Colourful orchestration, charming cantabiles, vigorous choruses - everything seemed to promise the work would enter the repertory. But the closure of the Theatre-Italien after just three performances in 1831 decided otherwise, and the score languished in the vaults of the Bibliotheque Nationale de France for 190 years.

After a few years break from recording, Nico Wayne Toussaint is making a dazzling comeback with an album entirely dedicated to the repertoire of James Cotton, the legendary harp player and singer who passed away last March and had been long associated with Muddy Waters. Nico met James Cotton in the US in 2003 and ended up on stage with him, sitting on his lap and blowing Cotton’s own harmonica! With this album he pays a vibrant tribute to his mentor, backed up by his usual band supplemented by a brass trio. Strong and moving.
