Jean-Marie Leclair's Scylla et Glaucus (Tragédie en un prologue et cinq actes, Paris, 1746) provides an excellent opportunity for György Vashegyi, a luxury cast and music scholars at the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles to revisit the French Baroque operatic canon and emerge with a fresh new take on this established work, the violin virtuoso and composer's single offering for the Paris Opéra.

Budapest's Orfeo Orchestra is a period instruments ensemble that has performed at concerts and festivals across Hungary. Formed by conductor György Vashegyi, the orchestra consists of 15 to 45 players, and has toured Austria, Germany, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Italy, Israel, and South America, appearing at many music festivals. The Orfeo Orchestra was formed in 1991 to perform Claudio Monteverdi's Orfeo, and continued to give concerts with Vashegyi's handpicked vocal ensemble, the Purcell Choir, in repertoire that ranged from Gesualdo to Brahms. The orchestra regularly performs at the Hungarian Haydn Society's Haydn Festival, held at the Esterházy Palace at Fertöd, and the Toujours Mozart Festival in Salzburg and Vienna.

What if the tour de force of French opera in the Age of Enlightenment was Scylla et Glaucus? At the age of 50, the famous violinist Leclair decided to write his first operatic piece, investing irrepressible energy in it. The drama is unrelenting: the nymph Scylla spurns the advances of the Demigod Glaucus, who seeks out the sorceress Circe to cast a spell on her; Circe is in love with Glaucus, drives Scylla to madness and turns her into a deadly rock… An infernal scene, an ocean storm and final cataclysm are employed to give striking relief to this trio of unappeased love, the effusions of irresistible beauty. The conductor and violinist Stefan Plewniak conducts a glorious stage of soloists in the eddies of vengeance!

Hervé Niquet resurrects Ariane et Bacchus (1696), using for the first time the exact performing forces and layout of the Paris Opéra orchestra in 1700 and thus giving us a historically informed version of this tragédie en musique by Marin Marais. The latter became a viol player at the Académie Royale de Musique in 1676, just as his mentor Lully’s Atys triumphed there. Lully subsequently initiated him into the skills of operatic composition, and Ariane et Bacchus was premiered nine years after the older man’s death. This production, made possible by the support of the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, was performed in concert at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées to great acclaim in 2022, when Diapason wrote that the work was ‘deservedly rescued from oblivion’ and was ‘magnified by a sober and telling interpretation from Hervé Niquet and Le Concert Spirituel, in perfect consonance with a remarkable cast’, featuring such luminaries as Judith van Wanroij, Véronique Gens, Mathias Vidal, Hélène Carpentier, Marie Perbost, Matthieu Lécroart, David Witczak, Tomislav Lavoie and Philippe Estèphe.

Nearly a century before Gluck, another opera called Iphigénie en Tauride – same plot, same protagonists – had immense success on the opera stage. This ‘first’ Iphigénie has rather a curious history. The opera was sketched out by composer Henri Desmarest around the year 1695, but he was then banished from France by Louis XIV for having married a young girl without her father’s consent. The uncompleted score of Iphigénie was then entrusted to André Campra. The opera, since lost and forgotten, was rediscovered by Benoît Dratwicki, Director of the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, who marvels at its stylistic unity: ‘Campra easily adopted Desmarest’s style. He just added some virtuoso arias to the divertissements, as well as the tuneful choruses that were his speciality.’ Iphigénie en Tauride had its premiere on 6 May 1704, and was revived throughout Europe from 1711. Thanks to Hervé Niquet, a top-flight team of singers, an orchestra well versed in French repertoire, and all their collaborative research into the practices and specific playing techniques of the early 18th century, Iphigénie sees the light of day once more.

A marsh nymph thinks she is so irresistible that Jupiter himself will take an interest in her… Brimming with exceptional dramatic and musical verve, this strangely under-recorded "ballet bouffon" offers us Rameau’s art in a nutshell: glittering orchestration, harmonies and rhythms of unprecedented modernity. William Christie and his comrades plunge with delight into what is one of its composer’s most fascinating works.
