Dynamic releases the Donizetti Opera’s production of “Lucrezia Borgia.” The acclaimed production from the 2019 festival features Carmela Remigio in the title role, Xabier Anduaga as Gennaro, Varduhi Abrahamyan as Orsini and Marko Mimica as Alfonso. Riccardo Frizza conducts the production which OperaWire said, “among the best all year.”

It is a well-established fact that our approach to music is generally twofold: this is the physicists' as well as the musicians' doing. One the one hand, music is considered to be based on acoustics, or even mathematics, which ought to give it the status of a science; on the other hand , it is acknowledged that it proceeds from psychological and sociological phenomena which, over the ages, have developed into an art, itself depending on various crafts. There is no longer any contradiction between the two approaches so long as one is prepared to accept them jointly, with enough insight to respect the methods proper to each end of the "chain."

Jean-Baptiste Lully’s unrivalled position at the Sun King’s court gave him freedom to produce numerous grand theatre works. Acis et Galatée is acknowledged as one of his masterpieces with its adroit alternation of effects and situations and its substantial use of dances and choruses. The opera was composed as part of lavish celebrations for the Dauphin’s stay at the castle of Anet and is a pastorale héroïque, with its plot based on the love story between the nymph Galatée and the shepherd Acis. The work’s ‘heroic’ element is provided by the presence of the mythical Neptune and cyclops Polyphème who, for the love of Galatée, crushes Acis under a boulder.

André Previn Known as a successful classical conductor, jazz pianist, and composer of jazz, classical, and film music, André Previn frequently bridged the gap between popular and so-called "serious" music, and in doing so broadened the horizons of both. A German-American who fled Nazi Germany with his family in his youth, he went on to win four Academy Awards, all for his work on film musicals in late '50s and '60s, including his adaptation of My Fair Lady (1964). By the '70s, he had established himself as one of the world's leading classical conductors, with terms at the London Symphony Orchestra (1968-1979), Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (1976-1984), and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (1985-1992). He also served as music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic from 1985 to 1989. During his tenure at the LSO, the BBC series André Previn's Music Hour made him household name.

Simon Boccanegra is set in 14th-century Genoa where Simon, formerly a dashing corsair, has become Doge. Though reunited with his long-lost daughter, the city becomes immersed in turmoil in a story rich in vengeance and the redemptive power of love. Verdi wrote the opera in 1857 but revised it in 1881 in association with Arrigo Boito, with whom he was to work on Otello. Verdi’s inclusion of a new scene set in the Great Council Chamber, was part of an approach that defines a completely new musical perspective, coherent with the language of the 1880s, and which ensured the opera’s belated triumph.

Following its rediscoveries of Meyerbeers Vasco da Gama and Nicolais Il templario, the Chemnitz Opera House has now made yet another valuable contribution to stage history with its revival of Hans Pfitzners Die Rose vom Liebesgarten (The Rose from the Garden of Love). At long last we in turn now have the opportunity to fill a significant discographic gap with a new complete recording of this work.

Boris Christoff was a Bulgarian operatic bass of the 20th century who specialized in roles from Verdi and Mussorgsky. He was also active as a recitalist and made several recordings of songs by Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, and other Romantic era composers. He was born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria in 1914. His mother was Russian, and his father was a Bulgarian teacher who also sang at a nearby church. Christoff began singing when he was very young, and he sang in the choir at the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia. Although his musical talents were already apparent, he decided to study law at Sofia University. After he finished his schooling in the late 1930s, he worked as a magistrate, and he sang in the Gusla Chorus.

During the 140 years of its existence, the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire de Paris was the most stable and the best orchestra in the city of Paris. Shortly before the Revolution, the composer Gossec and others founded the Ecole Royale de Chant (Royal Singing School) with fifteen students in 1784. The National Directory established a country-wide system of musical education with a Conservatoire Superior (the Paris Conservatoire) as the head institution. It took over the staff of the former Ecole Royale de Chant and opened in October, 1796, with 115 professors and 351 pupils. In its very first season, the Conservatoire initiated its practice of giving an annual concert featuring its prizewinning students.

This is one of the most beautiful and best sounding records I own. A real sonic wonder by audiophile label Harmonia Mundi. Jean-Philippe Rameau ( 25 September 1683 – 12 September 1764) was one of the most important French composers and music theorists of the Baroque era. He replaced Jean-Baptiste Lully as the dominant composer of French opera and is also considered the leading French composer for the harpsichord of his time, alongside François Couperin.

For her first solo disc, Marie van Rhijn brings together two of her passions: the French vocal repertoire of the "tragedie lyrique" and the music for the viola da gamba. This program explorers the musical colors of King Louis XIV's court. Sometimes orchestral and at other times intimate, these works are beautifully performed by Rhijn on a rare harpsichord from 1679, which has never been recorded before.
