Quantum Decision Theory

This book discusses a link between statistical theory and quantum theory based on the concept of epistemic processes – which can be e.g. statistical investigations or quantum mechanical measurements, and refer to processes that are used to gain knowledge about something. The book addresses a range of topics, including a derivation of the Born formula from reasonable assumptions, a derivation of the Schrödinger equation in the one-dimensional case, and a discussion of the Bell inequality from an epistemic perspective.

This new edition offers a comprehensive introduction to the analysis of data using Bayes rule. It generalizes Gaussian error intervals to situations in which the data follow distributions other than Gaussian. This is particularly useful when the observed parameter is barely above the background or the histogram of multiparametric data contains many empty bins, so that the determination of the validity of a theory cannot be based on the chi-squared-criterion.

This volume contains articles from invited speakers at a meeting which took place in Delphi, during the week of October 12-16, 1987. The theme of the meeting was ''The concept of probability" and was organized by the "Group of Interdisciplinary Research" (Physics Department, University of Athens) and the Theoretical and Physical Chemistry Institute of the National Hellenic Research Foundation, Athens.
