WINDPOWER from composer Eric Biddington highlights the versatility of the saxophone through the proficiency and musicality of the players, the Saxcess Quartet, in a collection of 11 original works. With multiple orchestrations and movements spanning 34 tracks, Biddington’s compositions are on full display with works for solo saxophone as well as sax trio and quartet. From tender and emotional to lush and energetic, Biddington’s compositions explore every nook and cranny of musical possibility. The dextrous and emotive performance by the Saxcess Quartet unites the pieces into a whole, providing a pleasing continuity throughout the varied arrangements and orchestrations.

Drummer and composer Kendrick Scott presents Corridors, a striking new album that finds the Houston-born drummer and composer paring down to a trio featuring saxophonist Walter Smith III and bassist Reuben Rogers. The anticipated follow-up to A Wall Becomes A Bridge, Scott’s much-lauded 2019 release with his band Oracle, Corridors features eight original compositions and one new arrangement of a beloved tune from the Bobby Hutcherson canon.

Lionel Loueke, one of the jazz world’s most searingly original and sought-after guitarists, has devoted the bulk of his output to original music. But Close Your Eyes, originally released on vinyl by Newvelle in 2018, found the Benin-born Loueke focusing entirely on standards and canonical jazz classics.

The real proof in the pudding of whether the Beastie Boys can really funk it up isn't on their own records. Naysayers have been claiming that it's all a rip, that the grooves are pure sample-happy appropriation. While Dr. Lonnie Smith gave Beck the B-3 treatment on his own Boogaloo to Beck, Love Bug mastermind and killer B-3 boss Ruben Wilson snagged P-Funk keyboard ace Bernie Worrell, saxophonist Andrew Beals, and a rhythm section that includes guitarist Doug Munro and skin popper LaFrae Olivia Sci and dug deep into the Beasties' catalog to let the real soul groove out of the bag.
