Genre: Documentary A Russian agent who headed MI6’s anti-Soviet division, Kim Philby seemed the perfect gentleman spy. Charming, right wing, bit of a drunk, but a decent sort of chap. In clips, he speaks with luxurious vowels and a slight stammer. The right sort. One of us. It was all an act, using the trappings of the British class system against us. Along with the other Cambridge Spies, his betrayal broke the establishment’s hold on spycraft. While this documentary claims to give some personal insight into Philby, there isn’t much to find. His disregard for his family (he celebrated when his wife died) suggests a hollowness, nothing behind the mask.
