In this context of versatility, it is interesting to know if this quality is related to the sax, Flores' main instrument. “I think that the guitar and the piano are much more versatile than the sax. Definitely, an instrument like the sax has, like any wind or rubbed string element, something more similar to singing, an added value in the expressive and with that question as the drawing of the notes, the modulation of each thing. And that gives you beautiful expressive possibilities. But what happens is also that the place where it has more development is in jazz, and that does not give you the possibility of playing in other genres. If I, as a musician, were to play a folk song, they would say: "How great, it has a touch of jazz!" On the other hand, with the guitar, even the voice, you have a little more versatility ”, postulates the musician.

Carmen McRae always had a nice voice (if not on the impossible level of an Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan) but it was her behind-the-beat phrasing and ironic interpretations of lyrics that made her most memorable. She studied piano early on and had her first important job singing with Benny Carter's big band (1944), but it would be another decade before her career had really gained much momentum.

Favoring a supple, sophisticated approach quite distinct from the grittier sound of her Chicago rivals, soul diva Barbara Acklin cut some of the finest records to come out of the Windy City in the late '60s, most notably "Love Makes a Woman" and "Am I the Same Girl." She also cut her fair share of overbaked dross, which renders The Complete Barbara Acklin on Brunswick Records such a generous but frustrating listen. Assembling all five of the LPs Acklin cut for Brunswick between 1968 and 1973 - an output totaling 45 songs - the set offers the kind of all-inclusive, respectful treatment rarely afforded to artists of Acklin's limited commercial stature, but given the abundance of inferior material, listeners without completist impulses will be far better served by more focused best-of collections.

A pivotal album in the development of the use of the Hammond organ in jazz – and Charles Earland's first exposure to a large audience! Durign the 60s, Charles was bumping around the Philly scene quite a bit – and recorded some small group indie sides that first gave a glimpse of his unique sound on the organ. But with this record, Earland really broke out wide – and hit a huge audience that made him one of the most in-demand players of the early 70s!

Recorded at the same show that produced his Jazz Organ Summit live album with Johnny "Hammond" Smith, Dr. Lonnie Smith and Jimmy McGriff, this is the full set, recorded live in Chicago on his birthday. Backed by a hard swinging quintet including Bob Devos on guitar, Greg Rockingham on drums, Eric Anderson on tenor sax and Jim Rotundi on trumpet, Earland swings through a set that includes great renditions of his "Black Talk," "The Burner's Magic" and closes with a swinging version of Pat Upton's "More Today than Yesterday." One burning set by a true master of the B-3. Highly recommended.

The young organist Charles Earland converted the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” into an anthem called “Black Talk” and came up with one of the huge soul-jazz hits of the early Seventies. In this album, Earland worked the same magic with two other pop songs, “Aquarius” and “More Today than Yesterday,” giving them the urgency and forward movement of R&B but managing to inject them with jazz values. He was greatly aided by a pair of soloists—trumpeter Virgil Jones and tenor saxophonist Houston Person—who added fuel to Earland’s fiery concept. Guitarist Melvin Sparks and the quintessential soul jazz drummer Idris Muhammad helped keep the blaze going.
