Spencer Radcliffe’s new album Hot Spring arrives this May on Run For Cover Records. The Chicago-based songwriter has teamed up again with his ensemble of collaborators, simply referred to as “Everyone Else” for simplicity’s sake, for the follow up to 2017’s standout Enjoy The Great Outdoors. Radcliffe & Everyone Else expand on those same natural themes on Hot Spring, expanding their talent for making laid-back, country-inspired rock songs into a full-blown pastoral. Opening with the swirling, cinematic strings of “The Chad Who Loved Me,” Mansun’s debut album, Attack of the Grey Lantern, is anything but a conventional Brit-pop record. Few debut records are this assured, especially when a group is developing such an idiosyncratic, individual style. Mansun recalls many artists — Suede, Manic Street Preachers, Tears for Fears, David Bowie, ABC, Blur, Prince — without sounding exactly like any of them. Attack of the Grey Lantern is a grandiose, darkly seductive blend of new wave and ’90s indie rock, filled with phased guitars, drum machines, and subversive, off-kilter song structures, many of which wind past five minutes. No song is ever quite what it seems — “Mansun’s Only Love Song” balances between soul and fractured pop, “Stripper Vicar” has new wave backing vocals and hard-rock chords, while “Taxloss” marries Suede’s dark glam rock with uneasy psychedelia. It’s an ambitious, even pretentious, record, but Mansun has enough confidence and skill to make it an astonishingly original debut.

On the surface, this isn't as essential a release as other BBC sessions LPs. Because the Cocteaus used drum machines, the backing tracks and the rhythms replicate the known versions much more than other bands forced to record live in the studio. Yet BBC Sessions is still a whopper of a treat for fans and the uninitiated, two hours of sound that builds and builds until one is overcome with unspeakable, barely understood emotions. At 30 songs on two CDs, it's an overview that sheds light on the masterful way the trio mutated so subtly, until their artistically premature end. It starts a bit too slowly on disc one, when the band couldn't really fight accusations of being Siouxsie & the Banshees wannabes – they were stealing whole dollops of the Banshees' vanguard style – but were somehow captivating anyway.

The Cocteau Twins' latter-period work - spanning the years 1993 to 1996 - are compiled this fall on this 53-track box set that includes the dreampop icons' final two albums plus two discs' worth of B-sides, EP tracks, live radio sessions and rarities. The set's first two discs include the studio albums Four-Calendar Café (1993) and Milk & Kisses (1996), while the latter two discs round up songs appearing on the six EPs and singles released during that span, along with radio sessions and a couple rarities. The collection comes in a sturdy box with a booklet that includes photos, sleeves notes by Chris Roberts and a discography. The collection pulls together the music the Cocteaus - guitarist Guthrie, singer Elizabeth Fraser and bassist Simon Raymonde - recorded for Fontana Records after leaving the 4AD label.

This quintet came from Walpole, Massachusetts, and boasted the powerful vocals of Caroline Stratton and the powerful guitar work of Dean Keady. Their sole album was produced by Michael Tschudin (The Listening, Cynara), and originally issued in March 1970. A taut blend of acid rock and ballads, it has been favorably compared to Jefferson Airplane and other leading psychedelic acts of the era.
