Featuring some of the biggest names of the pre-British Invasion era, the Lucky Parker-compiled 2 CD set Teen Dreams includes hits from one-time rockabilly Johnny Burnette swapping primal yelps for swooping strings, Gidget heart-throb James Darren, American Bandstand idols Fabian, Bobby Rydell and Frankie Avalon, pop princess Connie Francis, former Mouseketeer and beach party icon Annette, Joanie Sommers (77 Sunset Strip) and Hawaiian Eye's Connie Stevens, together with a wealth of lesser-heard teeners: Jimmy Beaumont, Dick Glasser, Barry Mann, the Casals, Bobby Curtola and Presley sound alike Ral Donner. Also included is an early offering from Gene Pitney and Ginny Arnell (as Jamie & Jane) together with the original versions of two songs covered by Blighty's own Billy Fury, "A Fool's Memory" aka "Running Around" (Ricky Shaw) and "A King for Tonight" (Barry Darvell), plus Linda Scott's charming cover of "A Thousand Stars", also a hit for Fury in 1960. Recollecting those carefree days of high school rings and letter sweaters, Shelley Fabares, Johnny Tillotson, Paul & Paula and Jerry Keller complement our selection with four chart-topping singles.

It’s that phenomenon that is thoroughly explored on All About Elvis: A Tribute To The King, a 3CD set compiled and annotated by rock & roll authority Dave Penny. Its 97 tracks, dating from 1954 to 1962, were recorded by Elvis’s contemporaries. CD1 Elvis Style rounds up recordings sung in the style of Elvis, including contributions by Conway Twitty, Ral Donner, Roy Orbison and Sleepy LaBeef. CD2 Elvis Songs comprises songs associated with Elvis, featuring the likes of Carl Perkins, Ricky Nelson, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, Wanda Jackson and Eddie Cochran. Bobby Bare aside, CD3 Elvis Adored has the least familiar names, as all manner of artists rushed to sing the praises of The King. Manager “Colonel” Tom Parker was a prolific licensor of lucrative Elvis merchandise, including badges, combs, dolls and key chains, and he was also a ruthless protector of copyright, so many recordings that traded on brand Presley were quashed or pulled from release at his instigation.

Beat music, British beat, or Merseybeat (after bands from Liverpool and nearby areas beside the River Mersey) is a pop and rock music genre that developed in the United Kingdom in the early 1960s. Beat music is a fusion of rock and roll (mainly Chuck Berry guitar style and the midtempo beat of artists like Buddy Holly), doo-wop, skiffle and R&B. The genre provided many of the bands responsible for the British Invasion of the American pop charts starting in 1964, and provided the model for many important developments in pop and rock music, including the format of the rock group around lead, rhythm and bass guitars with drums. The Beat Of The Pops - excellent selection of beat tracks.

George Goldner Presents The Gone Story: Doo-Wop to Soul 1957-1963 contains 65 songs representing a dead-perfect cross-section of the singles output of one of New York's great R&B labels of the late 1950s and early 1960s. The opening cut, the Dubs' slow, romantic "Don't Ask Me (To Be Lonely)," shows just how far George Goldner's conception of rhythm & blues had come in the four years since he'd founded Rama Records in 1953. Gone Records, starting in 1957, featured a more sophisticated output, oriented toward elegant, impassioned ballads rather than the dance numbers that had gone over so big in the mid-'50s.

Us Brits take our music very (very) seriously. It is often part of a whole scene which can include fashion, drug habits, social events and in the extreme, a whole ethos. We are very protective of something we put so much time and effort into and criticism goes to the core. The Northern Soul scene started over four decades ago and was never meant to be more than a passing fad. It just got so good we couldn’t bear to let go, or grow up. We still have an emotional attachment to records played by teenagers to teenagers an eon ago. The music was all brand new to us at that time and being brought up in a culture thousands of miles away from its source, we had to make it up as we went along. Knowledge was limited and we had no idea of the circumstances or origins of the recordings. For all we knew, Barnaby Bye could have come straight outta Philly’s black ghetto. Actually, we wouldn’t have cared had we known they had long hair and flares; the beat and sound was all. Dance records were what we wanted. They were usually based on the classic Motown sound, but we veered off up many a dark musical alley. Soul revisionism didn’t happen until the momentum and euphoria finally calmed down in the late 70s.

The Forgotten 45s 1960-1962 follows hot on the heels of The Forgotten 45s 1957-1959, Fantastic Voyage s previous survey of The Ones That Got Away, which has already proved a bigger-seller and been the subject of an enthusiastic review in The Daily Mirror. Not every record that s released can be a hit. Not every record that s released deserves to be a hit, but frequently records that do aren t and that s what this set is all about.
