Beethoven's five sonatas for cello and piano laid the foundations of twentieth-century musical thought. Under the fingers of Gary Hoffman and David Selig, these five monuments of musical history, though dating from the early nineteenth century, reveal all their premonitory dimension. For these two peerless musicians, this recording marks the culmination of an artistic partnership that began more than thirty years ago. Gary Hoffman and David Selig met in 1986 and have been programing Beethoven's sonatas for many years. Sometimes they even play them all in a single concert. Hoffman says, "I regret that the notion of individuality is being lost today. What is wonderful is to reveal the different 'characters' of the score. Even in Beethoven's quartets, there are voices that emerge from a sonic 'fusion'."

Best-known for his corporate brand logos and art direction, Paul Rand (1914–1986) transformed commercial art from craft to profession, introduced European design standards to American commercial art, influenced the look of advertising and book design, and altered the ways in which major corporations including IBM, UPS, and Westinghouse did business. His adherence to a strict design form in his work for corporate clients was balanced by a playful side , captured in this spirited collection of literal (and figural) back-of-the-envelope sketches, doodles, notes, and imaginative sparks that later found their full form in his children's books, logos, and personal work.

Ayn Rand (b. Alice Rosenbaum) was born in 1905 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Escaping from Soviet Union, she came to America as a temporary visitor in 1926 but remained for the rest of her life. Later, she would also defy the cultural and political views of contemporary America in such best-selling novels as THE FOUNTAINHEAD and ATLAS SHRUGGED. Her unique philosophy, Objectivism, challenged the cultural tradition of 2,500 years. She attained a worldwide fame and a readership numbering in the millions.
