The Staples' story goes all the way back to 1915 in Winona, Mississippi, when patriarch Roebuck "Pops" Staples entered the world. A contemporary and familiar of Charley Patton's, Roebuck quickly became adept as a solo blues guitarist, entertaining at local dances and picnics. He was also drawn to the church, and by 1937 he was singing and playing guitar with the Golden Trumpets, a spiritual group based out of Drew, Mississippi. Moving to Chicago four years later, he continued playing gospel music with the Windy City's Trumpet Jubilees.

The easy harmony sounds of Baltimore's Softones — Marvin Brown, Steve Jackson, Elton Lynch, and Byron Summerville — enjoyed limited popularity in the States, rarely ranging beyond the boundaries of the East Coast. Under Hugo & Luigi guidance, they scored with a fancy reworking of "That Old Black Magic" on H & L Records, but got labeled as remake artists and Hugo & Luigi studio puppets — the producers/writers who stifled the Stylistics' record sales in the States.

20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: Motown 70's, Vol. 2 collects a dozen more of Motown's most distinctive tracks from the '70s, including the Temptations' "Ball of Confusion," Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On," Gladys Knight & the Pips' "If I Were Your Woman," and the Spinners' "It's a Shame." Songs by the Supremes, the Commodores, and Rare Earth round out this collection, which may be too obvious for Motown diehards; however, it's still a solid choice for someone who wants the label's biggest hits in one convenient package.

Love Starved Heart: Rare and Unreleased is a compilation album by Marvin Gaye. Released in 1994 on Motown Records, the collection features some rarities from the soul singer's catalog during his formative years in the label between his breakthrough year as an R&B star in 1963 to around the time of his late-1960s hits including "I Heard It through the Grapevine". Covering material he worked on with luminaries such as Holland-Dozier-Holland, Smokey Robinson and William "Mickey" Stevenson, the disc showcases Gaye's growth as a vocalist. In 1999, an expanded version was released including bonus tracks and a rare interview.

With a total of 40 Pop chart hits, Dionne Warwick's recordings for the Scepter label rank as arguably the most successful run of any artist - and certainly of any female artist - for an independent label during the 1960s. But all that success had a downside for her considerable legacy: Scepter became a hot property for acquisition, and as a result the label's holdings were bought and sold several times before Dionne herself arranged to buy her own masters back. By that time, though, the Scepter tapes had been scattered in disarray, thus leaving a lot of material in limbo and causing compilers to throw up their hands. Limited to 5000 copies. Paper sleeve. RAW SOUL, originally released as KING-1610 was James Brown's second of five album releases in 1967. The iconic "rainbow" cover was traded for a more "hip" line drawing when the album was reissued in 1970. The original 1967 UK release on Pye International had it's own unique jacket as well. All subsequent CD issues reverted to the original art. The album was the usual mix of recent single releases with two cuts (3 & 8) from the unreleased (at the time) OUT OF SIGHT and one rare (for Brown at the time) LP only track (10).
