Brenda Holloway is one of the unsung heroes of the Motown story. She had a soulful, gritty voice; stunning good looks; great songs (some of which she wrote herself); but no hits. Her signature song was her drop-dead ballad "Every Little Bit Hurts," and she also wrote and recorded the original of "You Made Me So Very Happy," later a hit for Blood, Sweat & Tears. Both of those songs are on this collection, as well as nine other solid cuts by Holloway, making this a good collection for Motown and soul fans who want to check out this fine singer.

Much of The-Dream’s underappreciated body of work has been about eliminating distinctions between rap and R&B. He was a trailblazer that brought hardcore rap sensibilities to an edgeless R&B era. Now, as rappers have adapted soulful songcraft as cover for being selfish lovers, the longtime sensualist has become more interested in making a clear delineation between the two.

Richard Stamz was a colourful R&B and soul DJ who operated in Chicago throughout the 50s and 60s. A slick, jive talker who hosted a groundbreaking black TV show in the city in 1956, his on-air persona ran from crown prince to royal highness. Around 1960 he took over the Cobra/Artistic/Abco studio and the Paso label, which he continued to run alongside his own Foxy operation. Bluesman Harold Burrage was already at Paso; he and Stamz began working closely together, with Burrage recording, composing songs, playing sessions and even voicing ads for Stamz’s radio show. Burrage’s 45s for Paso and Foxy are superb examples of early 60s blues as it moved towards soul. His extremely rare original version of Betty Everett’s ‘Please Love Me’ will be of great interest to new breed R&B fans, as will many of the tracks on these largely uncharted labels.

"Still Waters Run Deep" is a 1970 album by the American vocal group The Four Tops released in March 1970 on the Motown label. Produced by longtime Norman Whitfield associate Frank Wilson, the album returned (the) Four Tops to the Top 40 on the Billboard album chart where it remained for 42 weeks peaking at #21. The album yielded the popular Top 30 hits, "Still Water (Love)" (#11), which was co-written by Smokey Robinson and their cover of "It's All in the Game" (#24), which featured rare co-leads by Four Tops members Abdul "Duke" Fakir, Renaldo "Obie" Benson and Lawrence Payton singing alongside prominent lead Levi Stubbs. The album also served as inspiration behind singer Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On", the hit title track, which was written by Benson.
