Here is a Christmas celebration attended by some of the greatest names in R&B. From the late 40s to the early 50s the biggest names in Blues including B.B. King, Amos Milburn, Charles Brown, Jimmy Witherspoon, Lowell Fulton, Roy Milton, The Drifters, Joe Turner and Chuck Berry sing their Christmas favourites. Being the blues of course, many of the songs emphasise how lonely Christmas can be without the one you love whilst others celebrate the holiday season with joyful songs and new versions of standards like "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer" and "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town". Many of these records constantly reappeared on the R&B sales every year. Some like Charles Brown's original million selling "Merry Christmas Baby" were still selling well into the soul era.

Of the numerous various-artist compilation CDs that have attempted to anthologize the recordings of the late '40s and early '50s most crucial to planting the seeds for rock & roll, this three-CD, 60-song set is probably the most definitive. Most prior collections along these lines have failed to present a truly comprehensive picture of rock & roll's roots, whether due to both licensing restrictions and/or track selection that fails to recognize the entirety of the wide spectrum of rock & roll's roots. While you'd need at least a ten-CD box set to approach inarguable definitiveness, The Roots of Rock 'n' Roll: 1946-1954 hits about as many of the key bases as possible within three CDs, including pivotal songs by Lionel Hampton, the Delmore Brothers, Louis Jordan, Hank Williams, Lloyd Price, Howlin' Wolf, the Drifters, Bill Haley, Big Joe Turner, Hank Ballard, and Muddy Waters, to start with just the most well-known artists included here.

A Boxful of Treasures is a 2004 compilation box set of recordings by folk rock legend Sandy Denny and comprises solo material and recordings made during her time as a member of Fotheringay, Fairport Convention, and other groups. The fifth CD contains previously unreleased tracks, most of which are demos recorded at Denny's home.
