The first four albums of the Dresdner Philharmonie featuring symphonies by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) and Dmitri Shostakovich (1906–1975) reveal fascinating aspects shared by both composers. The most recent recording of the two Symphonies No. 5 received high praise from the critics: “Sanderling puts the interpretative bombast of the 5th Symphony behind him.

Harnoncourt eschews tradition for tradition’s sake in the symphony. He approaches the score afresh, and the result is a reading both idiomatic and illuminating. Harnoncourt coaxes sparkling detail from the interplay of strings and woodwinds and allows the lower brass to come through cleanly. Trombones punch out the melody at the end of the first movement and the timpani strokes are crisp. The second movement flows gently, with beautiful playing from the woodwinds gliding over a lush, glowing surface of strings. There is no wallowing or point-making in this rendition of the famous largo. The references to Beethoven and Smetana in the fleet scherzo do not call attention to themselves, and the finale is urgent and majestic.

"…Recorded in 1955 and 1958, respectively, these performances with the phenomenal Boston Symphony Orchestra sound magnificent with the spacious separation and the close simulation of a real orchestral environment made possible by DSD and multichannel remastering. Beyond the superb audio quality, these recordings are fascinating documents of Münch's elegant interpretations of Schubert…."

For the past 70 years, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra (‘The SPO’) has played a leading role in enriching the cultural lives of Korea’s citizens. In 2005, under the inspirational leadership of Maestro Myung-Whun Chung, the orchestra was reborn and this set a new standard for orchestral music in Korea. The SPO performs a wide range of repertoire from Mozart to Messiaen and continues to shatter box office records. Indeed, in 2011 the SPO became Asia’s first orchestra to sign an exclusive worldwide ten-CD contract with the Deutsche Grammophon record label. Impressively, the first two albums that were released instantly went platinum.

As the last completed symphony that Mahler wrote, the Ninth has often been heard by audiences as the composer’s swan song: a nostalgic, moving farewell from a composer conscious of his own mortality. This interpretation is of course easily justifiable, as etched into the musical fabric of the symphony are references to the tragedies that befell the composer in the years before his death.

On July 24th, Gerd Schaller conducted the Philharmonia Festiva in a performance of the Bruckner Symphony No. 9 in a "four movement version with Finale supplemented from original sources and completed by Gerd Schaller." The performance took place in the Ebrach Abbey in Ebrach, Germany as part of the Ebracher Musiksommer. As with Schaller's other Bruckner performances at Ebrach, the concert was recorded by Bavarian Radio Studio Franken and will be released on CD this December on the Profil label. Gerd Schaller’s completion and performance gained long applause, the conductor repeatedly called back to take a further bow, and to my ears succeeded wonderfully in its aim of presenting a completed Ninth as a great musical event and a shattering, revelatory spiritual journey.
