You can tell a great deal about performance quality from one crucial consideration: timing. In the context of Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata as played by Kian Soltani and Aaron Pilsan, it’s in the first movement. Listen to 2'58", an arpeggio piano chord at the close of the exposition, then the pause before the repeated opening – sheer perfection. No one on disc judges it better. The overriding impression is of a watertight musical partnership, one’s attention divided equally between cellist and pianist.

Emmanuel Pahud is one of the most prolific and distinguished flutists active in contemporary France. His repertory is broad, stretching from the Baroque to contemporary music, including jazz. Pahud was born in Geneva, Switzerland, on January 27, 1970. When he was four, he first heard the flute and immediately demanded to be taught how to play it. His family, which was not musical, traveled frequently for his father's work responsibilities, and he lived as a child in Baghdad, Paris, Madrid, and Rome. In the latter city, the family of flutist François Binet lived in the same apartment building as Pahud, and he began studies with 15-year-old Philippe Binet. Soon he graduated to studies with François Binet. At the family's next stop, in Brussels, he studied with Michel Moinil and Carlos Bruneel, playing a Mozart concerto with the National Orchestra of Belgium at 13. Pahud enrolled at the Paris Conservatory, winning several major prizes while he was a student, and after graduating, he soon landed principal flutist slots with the Basel Radio Symphony in Switzerland and the Munich Philharmonic. He continued his studies with Aurèle Nicolet, who had formerly been principal flutist with the Berlin Philharmonic and coached him on how to approach his audition for that ensemble. The stratagem worked, and in 1992, Pahud was invited by conductor Claudio Abbado to join the orchestra as the principal flutist.

"Il Prete Rosso" - the red priest, Antonio Vivaldi got this nickname because of his red hair. He came to the famous Venetian girls' orphanage Ospedale della Pietà as a young priest and violin teacher. There he also became acquainted with the instrument of the transverse flute, which was new at that time, played at the Ospedale by a girl called "Lucieta traversie". Vivaldi recognised the technical and expressive possibilities of the transverse flute and used it in a wide variety of genres.

One of the most prominent solo flutists in the post-Rampal era, Patrick Gallois studied with Jean-Pierre Rampal and Maxence Larrieu at the Paris Conservatory, where at age 19 he won first prize. He immediately became principal flutist in the orchestra of Lille, the major city nearest his hometown, and in 1977 he moved to the principal position in the French National Orchestra, where he remained until 1984. After that, he pursued an increasingly successful career as a soloist, although he also founded his own chamber orchestra, the Académe de Paris, in 1990, and since then has served as a guest conductor with orchestras around Europe.
