Founding Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman essentially retired from music after leaving the band in 1993, choosing to dedicate time to his family and his restaurant, Sticky Fingers. He returned to music in 1997 with Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings, a rotating old-time rock & roll, R&B, blues, and boogie collective of superstar musicians anchored by keyboardist Georgie Fame, guitarist Albert Lee, pianist Gary Brooker, and guitarist Terry Taylor. Their first album, Struttin' Our Stuff, appeared that year and it was followed two years later by Anyway the Wind Blows, which featured cameos from Peter Frampton, Geraint Watkins, Paul Carrack, and, notably, fellow Stone Keith Richards.

Though this is not the most recent Ray Charles box set collection, it may be the best. That's because it focuses on Ray's great growth in the 1950s, particularly his days with Atlantic Records. The set opens with Ray still in a Charles Brown, smooth-voice, mellow-piano mode, but in short order, he discovers his own identity. From the good time of "It Should Have Been Me" on disc one, though the orgiastic "What'd I Say, Parts 1 & 2" on disc three, the man they call "The Genius" rocks, rolls, raises the rafters, and sinks way down low with the blues. This box also features an excellent essay by the late music historian, Robert Palmer. –Robert Gordon

Warren Haynes has been almost ubiquitous since he joined the Allman Brothers Band, and formed Gov't Mule with Allen Woody and Matt Abts. He's played and collaborated with everyone from the Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan to Little Milton and Taj Mahal. Fans might be surprised to learn that Southern soul was an early love. But they shouldn't be. Man in Motion is Haynes' first conscious effort and to fully indulge his love for this music, and his first solo record with backing musicians since 1993. Co-produced with Gordie Johnson, Man in Motion boasts a stellar cast: George Porter, Jr. on bass, Ivan Neville on organ, clavinet, and backing vocals, Ian McLagan on Wurlitzer and piano, drummer Raymond Weber, tenor saxophonist Ron Holloway, and backing vocalist Ruthie Foster.

When Sam Cooke signed with RCA Records in 1960, he had already had several hits ("You Send Me," "What A Wonderful World," and "Only Sixteen" among them) on the small independent label Keen Records. He had paid attention to the business sides of things, too, and he signed with RCA because he was allowed to keep control of his song publishing…

Genre: Rock & Roll

During the 1950s Memphis was named the USA's cleanest and safest city and the diversified population had reached nearly 400,000. This 4CD compilation looks at the music recorded in Memphis and its environs by native Memphians and shows the stupendous effect the sounds had on the world of popular music. Music had always abounded in Memphis but there were no recording facilities there, an omission that one Sam Phillips was about to rectify, he opened the Memphis Recording Service at 706 Union Avenue on the 2nd of January 1950. He proceeded to record anything that moved including weddings, funerals and artists for WREC radio. He soon went on to record artists for record labels such as Gilt Edge and 4 Star and it didn't take more than a few months for him to record the likes of B.B. King, a young Ike Turner with Jackie Brenston, and madcap Rufus Thomas. Come 1952 Sam started his own record label, Sun, and the rest as they say is history.

There's also plenty of hard pounding Salsa with Ray Barretto's cover of 'Pastime Paradise,' Mongo Santamaria's cover of 'Cloud Nine' and Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra's cover of Spoon's 'I Turn My Camera On.' More recent artists include Mighty Mo and the Winchester 7 and Nostalgia 77 covering 'The Message' and 'Seven Nation Army', respectively. Each infectious song will leave listeners helplessly grooving to the beats, letting go on the dance floor and ultimately begging for more.

A pair of these were featured on the live albums Rhythm Kings Live (2005) and Live Communication (2011), but it took them until 2017 to deliver a new studio album with Rocking the Roots.
