Richard Marlow came of age amid ancient and venerable institutions whose works he triumphantly shepherded through an era sorely challenging traditional assumptions. As a chorister at Southwark Cathedral, he sang at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. His education was accomplished at Cambridge University's Selwyn College, where he became an organ scholar and research fellow, studying under Thurston Dart, the musicologist and harpsichordist whose performances and recordings of English Renaissance music – shoulder to shoulder with those of Alfred Deller and Gustav Leonhardt – revealed it afresh to a new generation of listeners in the 1950s and '60s.

SOMM RECORDINGS announces the release of I Vow to Thee, My Country, believed to be the first recording to feature all of Gustav Holst’s sacred choral music, by the Chapel Choir of the Royal Hospital Chelsea directed by William Vann, with organist Joshua Ryan and Richard Horne on tubular and bass bells.A prolific composer best known for his orchestral spectacular The Planets, Holst was an expressive and sincere composer and arranger of religious music despite his professed agnosticism.

As the Staatskapelle Berlin begins to look for its next music director (only the fourth since 1955!), this release finds the band’s own winds turning to Richard Strauss, who held the job some 110+ years ago. Together, they recorded their old chief conductors’ complete music for winds, including rarities like the Sonatinas “From an Invalid’s Workshop” and “The Happy Workshop” which Strauss dedicated to Mozart. Covering Strauss’ very early and very late creative output, the four pieces (plus the Eulenspiegel arrangement), give a fascinating insight into the development of Strauss, a horn player’s son.
