Glenn Prangnell’s Trouserphonic Records label is home to Groovy Uncle and Suzi Chunk and has done an excellent job keeping the flag flying for the beat and R&B sounds of the Sixties. This release, the first on the label that doesn’t feature Prangnell or Chunk, makes it clear from the off with the band's name that record producer Jim Riley has taken a slightly different route with his debut for the label.

The audio companion to David Toop's excellent book advances the case he made, that Les Baxter, Aphex Twin, The Beach Boys, Herbie Hancock, King Tubby and My Bloody Valentine are all related by their effect on sound pioneering. A double-disc set, Ocean of Sound impresses not only with its incredible diversity of musical styles, but with how easily these artists work next to each other. The second disc includes consecutive contributions by Paul Schütze, the Velvet Undergound, Holger Czukay of Can, The Beach Boys, African Headcharge and Sun Ra. Besides illustrating Toop's point beautifully, the album is an excellent addition to the collection of any wide-ranging ambient fan.

When one considers that the musicians on this quartet date are each associated, to an extent, with the New Orleans Young Lions and modern jazz movements, this music is rather surprising. There are no hints of parade rhythms; instead the result is a modern form of cool jazz. Bassist Neal Caine, who wrote all of the selections which sport original chord changes, keeps the group under tight control, although there are individual heroics and a few brief explosive moments.

A mix of old favorites and buried treasures makes this edition of Who's Next a definite must. One of the defining albums of 70s hard rock from one of the 60s most successful bands, the original album includes some of The Who's best-known work, such as the anthemic "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again", the by turns sorrowful and angry "Behind Blue Eyes", and perennial favorite "My Wife". The new tracks on this album are equally worth hearing, including "Pure and Easy" (an alternate edition of which is available on Odds & Sods) and the original version of "Behind Blue Eyes". A hard rock classic, Who's Next is required listening for rock fans of all ages.
