It's nothing short of remarkable that Roger Waters has built a successful career on obsessive ruminations on alienation, megalomania, and guilty fame, largely on the backs of one of history's most long-lived arena acts. The musical legacy Waters has shared with "another band" (as he sharply refers to his former Pink Floyd mates in this collection's self-penned liner notes) has served two distinctly different functions: part and parcel of the latter's nostalgia act; autobiographical foundation for the former's ongoing, if decidedly egocentric, Rage at the World. That's essentially the rationale this live collection uses to lean heavily on Waters's Pink prime, from Dark Side of the Moon through The Final Cut. And if that frame sometimes overshadows the images of Waters's solo work–well, no one said he wasn't a pragmatic entertainer.

The performance of Radamisto is notable for an array of vocal talent headed by Janet Baker. Every name is familiar and admired. The ECO was a vibrant presence in the Handel operatic and oratorio market at this time and Norrington at the helm ensures that period practices are helpfully integrated into the fabric of a modern instrument performance – recitatives for instance, once the bane of some 1960s and 70s performances, move fluidly and intelligently, highly responsive to textual meaning and dramatic implications. Note Act I’s Reina, infausto avviso when Tigrane and Polissena’s recitative embodies fine pacing, telling rubato, and appropriately coloured accompaniment. Some cuts though were clearly necessary to accommodate the length of the production.

The great French pianist Roger Muraro joins Alpha Classics for several recording projects. Born in Lyon to Venetian parents, he was a pupil of Yvonne Loriod and is regarded as the leading specialist in the music of Olivier Messiaen, to which he has devoted much of his career. But this noted pedagogue, a former professor at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Paris, is also renowned for his profound and sensitive approach to the music of Ravel, Chopin, Schumann - and Liszt, of whom he is particularly fond. He now presents a monumental masterwork by Liszt which is in his view a work of 'universal intimacy': 'I admire the freedom with which the evocations of the soul, of nature, of the colours of the masters of Italian painting unfold in succession. Everything Liszt saw during his pilgrimage to Switzerland and Italy contributed to a process of reflection, a journey, a quest to bring him closer to his ideal where silence became the ultimate authority.'

Among the major choral-orchestral works of the 19th century, Sir Roger Norrington and his former Orchestra, the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart des SWR, have tackled over the years, now finally comes Brahms' "German Requiem." one of the most beautiful and popular sacred music works in the repertoire. Brahms’ contemporaries, including his close friend Clara Schumann were moved with the score and were enthusiastic about it - and it has been a favorite with the general public ever since. Although Biblical texts are used, the piece is not in the standard church-liturgical tradition. It was Brahms‘personal response to "those who mourn"! The central idea of this masterpiece is the reality of human existence. It is precisely this „earthly character“ that Roger Norrington uses to shape his interpretation emphasizing the grave beautify of the music and not religious awe; in this, Norrington draws us close to the composer’s intentions. He is ably supported by soprano soloist Christina Landshamer, basso Florian Boesch, SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart and the NDR.
