Thirty years after the release of the legendary album 'The Juliet Letters' by Elvis Costello and the Brodsky Quartet, Matangi and Ruben Hein present a 21st-century response to this masterful song cycle. Inspired by the collected Dutch letters from the book P.S. by Jet Steinz, Matangi and Ruben have created new songs that add a contemporary chapter to the world of multidisciplinary music experiences. The songs address themes of friendship, doubt, brotherly love, fear, and betrayal. They feature a contemporary, eclectic sound that blends elements of classical, jazz, and pop music. During the 2024/2025 season, they will tour across the Netherlands.

uben Hein tourde de voorbije jaren bijvoorbeeld met Fink, een multi-instrumentaal ingestelde artiest die in zijn loopbaan haast elk genre wel heeft uitgeprobeerd, van de dance tot de blues. Ondanks die ervaring – en nog enkele andere samenwerkingen – heeft Hein besloten om op Groundwork Rising dicht bij zijn eigen basis te blijven. Zijn stem en de piano dragen de plaat. Naar eigen zeggen zag Hein tijdens de Hard Believer-tour juist hoe het anders kon, waardoor hij het gevoel kreeg om zijn intuïtie te volgen. ‘Ik leerde weer naar de muziek luisteren zoals ik als kind deed. Het raakt me of niet. Alle vooroordelen die ik over mijn muziek had, moest ik laten varen. Vandaar ook de titel Groundwork Rising: de grondslag voert de boventoon’, zo vertelt hij zelf.
