Kazumi Watanabe is a jazz and jazz fusion guitarist, from Tokyo, Japan. Kazumi learned to play guitar from Sadanori Nakamure, one of Japan's grandmaster guitarists. Kazumi released his first recording in 1971, and quickly became a promising guitarist in his own right. In 1979, he formed an all-star band with some of Japan's leading studio musicians, and recorded the album Kylyn, which is considered a masterpiece in fusion music. During the eighties Watanabe released a considerable number of jazz-rock albums. To Chi Ka (1980), with its funk influences and bright sound, is probably the most famous early title.

The world was hardly clamoring for another recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons violin concertos, but the Australian Chamber Orchestra has evolved into one of the world's top concert attractions, and it's natural that their fans would want to hear them in this ubiquitous work. Violin soloist Richard Tognetti plays a 1743 Guarneri instrument with a powerfully flashy tone, and he gets a large variety of sounds from it. These are complemented by the inclusion in the booklet of the four sonnets included by Vivaldi in the score (and possibly written by the composer himself). This is always desirable, for the Four Seasons are programmatic in a way that's hard to pick up from the music alone, and the inclusion of the texts is remarkably rare…

One of the first QuadraDisc LPs that RCA ever released, Dimension III holds the unique distinction of being a “single inventory” title, meaning the four-channel quadraphonic mix was the only mix of the album done, as the label wanted to tout the backwards compatibility of quadraphonic records with existing stereo systems. In the wake of Castor’s acrimonious departure from RCA in late 1973, the label took Dimension III out of print and it has remained that way – until now. This new SACD edition presents the original quadraphonic mix in all its glory, along with a stereo fold-down of the quad mix – more than forty years later the universal compatibility of the QuadraDisc fulfilled in a way its inventors could never have imagined.

The liner notes for Urban Grooves describe Joe Chambers as "a good jazz drummer." Actually, he's more than good; he's an excellent jazz drummer who also knows his way around the vibraphone and the marimba. Not every album that Chambers has appeared on is great, but his skills as a musician certainly are. One thing Chambers isn't, however, is a terribly forceful drummer; he knows when to hold back. Chambers doesn't have quite as gentle a touch as Shelly Manne, but he isn't as aggressive as Art Blakey or Art Taylor either. Recorded in March 2002 – when Chambers was three months away from his 60th birthday – Urban Grooves underscores his intuitive, insightful nature. This acoustic-oriented post-bop date finds Chambers leading an all-star quintet that boasts Gary Bartz on alto and soprano sax, Eric Reed on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and Bobby Sanabria on percussion – and Chambers.
