In the 1990s two critically acclaimed and massively popular CDs by the great singer/songwriter Sam Dees. These were sourced from his work as a recording artist and songwriter for Clinton Moon's Showtime Productions based in Birmingham, Alabama. Some were demos and some finished masters, possibly recorded for a second album following the one released on Atlantic in 1975. More tapes of equivalent quality from this period have come to light and these are included with some tracks which only made it onto compilation CDs at the time, his Clintone 45 release, and a couple of alternate takes from The Show Must Go On LP to make the third and final release from this creative and productive era.

The GRC Records set-up in Atlanta produced a wealth of great soul music. Because of the sudden curtailment of the company, due to owner Michael Thevis’ incarceration, so much of it never saw a release. The tapes were preserved though and with many tracks being issued. This latest batch of tape discoveries is of shockingly high quality. Sam Dees’ presence is a major cause of this. Standouts include Miss Louistine’s original version of ‘Con Me’ – surely a contender to be a Deep Soul Treasure, had Dave Godin heard it. Her take on Dees’ ‘Extra Extra’ is possibly the opposite emotion – sheer joy at finding her lover; equally well expressed. ‘Paperman’ is a classic mid 70s Dees’ composition, well sung by Wes Lewis with his group Alpaca Phase III. Dees collaborated with another major GRC talent, Joe Hinton, for the funkier ‘Shouldn’t I Be Given The Right To Be Wrong’. Hinton co-penned two songs with backing singer Louvain Demps who left her job with Motown’s backing girls the Andantes to move to Atlanta with Hinton. Their ‘Grant Me One More Day’ is a beautiful track and ‘Depend On Me’ is another worthy find.

"Madam Butterfly" is the 7th album by American soul/R&B group Tavares, produced by Bobby Martin and released in 1979 on the Capitol label. By this stage in the group's career, they had become known as a disco act due to successful singles such as "Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel", "Whodunit" and "More Than a Woman." However, Madam Butterfly is noted for its lack of anything approaching disco material, and, as such, is considered to be more akin in style to the group's 1973-'75 albums than to their '76-'78 Freddie Perren-produced output.

A former U.S. Marine turned Mercury Records staff producer responsible for everything from Bruce Channel's "Hey Baby" to Ray Stevens' "Ahab the Arab," Shelby Singleton formed his Nashville-based SSS International Group in 1966. Although best known for fare like Jeannie C. Riley's country-pop juggernaut "Harper Valley P.T.A.," SSS and its spinoffs, Silver Fox and Minaret, also generated a vast sampling of deep-fried soul, of which Kent's "Southern Soul Showcase: Cryin' in the Streets" represents the first official digital survey to date. In comparison to the backwoods soul wrought in places like Memphis and Muscle Shoals, SSS productions are clearly the product of Nashville the songs blur the lines between soul and country to the point where such distinctions become irrelevant.
