Si l’on connaît son visage, éternellement jeune grâce au botox, et ses pectoraux qu’il aime à exhiber au grand air, son goût pour les sports et les propos extrêmes, on ignore de quel bois est réellement fait ce tsar du XXIe siècle. Insaisissable, secret, terne, l’ex-passe-muraille du KGB devenu milliardaire fait preuve d’un autoritarisme qui, s’il fait froid dans le dos vu de chez nous, a pourtant réveillé chez bon nombre de Russes un sentiment de fierté retrouvée. Peu leur importe de savoir que les Tchétchènes ne sont pas à l’origine des attentats de Moscou, qui a assassiné Anna Politkovskaïa, ou que Poutine soit l’héritier d’Yvan le Terrible et de Staline puisqu’il est parvenu à les convaincre – miracle de la propagande – qu’il avait rendu à la Russie ce qu’elle avait perdue depuis la chute du Mur : sa grandeur.

Muhammad Ali: Through the Eyes of the World takes a fairly straightforward documentary approach, chronicling Ali's life and career through film footage and interviews with journalists, loved ones, and a few bizarre commentators, like Scottish comedian Billy Connolly. The film does an excellent job of conveying both Ali's genuine importance as a historical figure and his incredible personal magnetism. Though the documentary doesn't shy away from his faults, Ali is simply impossible to dislike. Most importantly, the film's commentary and carefully selected fight footage make it clear even to those who don't follow the sport what a remarkable boxer Ali was. At one point, Lennox Lewis refers to the "sweet science" of not getting hit, and watching Ali dodge a barrage of punches, we understand exactly what he means. Muhammad Ali: Through the Eyes of the World doesn't pack quite the dramatic wallop of When We Were Kings, but it is a compelling look at one of history's greatest athletes.

Superbe documentaire sur la vie de Muhammad ALI. Au travers, de témoignages de nombreuses personnes médiatiques ou non (une de ses femmes, une de ses filles, Tom Jones, James Earl Jones, son entraîneur, ses anciens adversaires, Billy Cristal, Rod Steiger, Richard Harris …) on suit la naissance de celui qui va devenir le plus grand boxeur du monde. De Cassius Clay à Muhammad Ali, rien ou presque ne nous est caché, les hauts et les bas, les combats victorieux à la loyale et ceux, même si c'est pas trop développé, ou la « ruse » à donnée un petit coup de main. Ses relations avec les femmes, sa conversion et son adhésion à une cause qu'il ne semble pas trop comprendre, ses prises de position courageuse sur la guerre du Vietnam et ce que cela va lui coûter (son titre, le droit de boxer)…

Tom, his 18-year-old sister Jessie (Lara Belmont), his father (Ray Winstone), and his pregnant mother (Tilda Swinton) live in close quarters in a small cottage; they sometimes bathe in the kitchen, and they have grown used to casual nudity around the house. But one day, Tom sees his father in a sexual embrace with Jessie. He tries to discuss what he's seen with her, but she refuses to talk about it. Unable to stand the tension in the household after his mother takes the seriously ill baby to the hospital, Tom confronts his father, who angrily denies the truth. Tom is finally forced to take drastic action to stop his vengeful and violent father. Written by Alexander Stuart from his own novel, The War Zone received an enthusiastic response at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival and was named Best New British Feature at the 1999 Edinburgh International Film Festival.
