The volume develops a thorough theory of singular fibers of generic differentiable maps. This is the first work that establishes the foundational framework of the global study of singular differentiable maps of negative codimension from the viewpoint of differential topology. The book contains not only a general theory, but also some explicit examples together with a number of very concrete applications.

Yogi Berra A SINGULAR Introduction to Commutative Algebra offers a rigorous intro­ duction to commutative algebra and, at the same time, provides algorithms and computational practice. In this book, we do not separate the theoretical and the computational part. Coincidentally, as new concepts are introduced, it is consequently shown, by means of concrete examples and general proce­ dures, how these concepts are handled by a computer. We believe that this combination of theory and practice will provide not only a fast way to enter a rather abstract field but also a better understanding of the theory, showing concurrently how the theory can be applied. We exemplify the computational part by using the computer algebra sys­ tem SINGULAR, a system for polynomial computations, which was developed in order to support mathematical research in commutative algebra, algebraic geometry and singularity theory. As the restriction to a specific system is necessary for such an exposition, the book should be useful also for users of other systems (such as Macaulay2 and CoCoA) with similar goals. Indeed, once the algorithms and the method of their application in one system is known, it is usually not difficult to transfer them to another system.

This engaging text describes the development of singular perturbations, including its history, accumulating literature, and its current status. While the approach of the text is sophisticated, the literature is accessible to a broad audience. A particularly valuable bonus are the historical remarks. These remarks are found throughout the manuscript. They demonstrate the growth of mathematical thinking on this topic by engineers and mathematicians.

Structured singular light is an ubiquitous phenomenon. It is not only created when light refracts at a water surface but can also be found in the blue daytime sky. Such light fields include a spatially varying amplitude, phase, or polarization, enabling the occurrence of optical singularities. Assuming that the reader is familiar with sheaf theory, the book gives a self-contained introduction to the theory of constructible sheaves related to many kinds of singular spaces, such as cell complexes, triangulated spaces, semialgebraic and subanalytic sets, complex algebraic or analytic sets, stratified spaces, and quotient spaces. The relation to the underlying geometrical ideas are worked out in detail, together with many applications to the topology of such spaces. All chapters have their own detailed introduction, containing the main results and definitions, illustrated in simple terms by a number of examples. The technical details of the proof are postponed to later sections, since these are not needed for the applications.
