The Glière is the most ambitious work here, running for nearly 23 minutes, almost a record length for a horn concerto. It is very florid and romantic—its unlikely model is Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto, to which it comes nearest in the finale which is a lively Russian dance. Although some of the material is ingenuous, notably the march rhythm of the first movement, it is quite a jolly piece and has much in common with the Richard Strauss concertos. Otherwise the best known work is the Dukas Villanelle which Dennis Brain liked to play, and which is attractively diverse in mood and style, although essentially a miniature.

An uncomparable Italian band indeed, Saint Just played a weird mix of Ethnic music and Folk Rock with plenty of Classical passages, where folk atmospheres alternate with organ themes and piano passages all the time but occasionally supported by light electric tunes. The music is soft but rather dark with plenty of acoustic guitars and characterized by Jenny's Sorrenti poetic and haunting vocal lines. While the whole album flows in a relaxed mood, there are surprisingly lots of breaks and alternating ideas in almost every track, which makes ''Saint just'' a demanding release. Organs, pianos and saxes have a major role leading the way and the few electric parts are well-played yet quite smooth. Surprisingly the self-titled number of the album is entirely sung in French by Sorrenti in a theatrical way with a definite beauty surrounding this delicate track.

Fournier was first taught piano by his mother but at the age of nine he suffered a mild case of polio and lost some of the agility in his legs and feet. He was no longer able to master the use of the piano pedals and so turned to the cello.

Paul Tortelier, born in Paris in 1914, became very well known in Britain through his remarkable program for BBC Television in which he gave to his young students so many insights into the music and its performance in the form of a Master class. As a performer himself his natural flair communicated his enthusiasm and genius to all in the audience as well as his fellow musicians; it seemed as if the cello was a natural extension of his body and he invited, as it were, the instrument to dance with him. Whilst he had an enormous range of musical sympathies it was to the music of Bach that he always returned – no coincidence that he made two recordings of the six Suites, the first in 1960 in Paris and then nearly 22 years later in London. He said, in reply to a question about atonality, that music is like a locked box – in order to get inside it you need a key! His engaging personality and genuine love and interest in music endeared him to his many fans throughout the world and it his death at the age of only 76 was greeted with universal sadness. This 20-CD set is being released to commemorate the 20th anniversary of his death on July 18, 1990.

Recorded live, this gala performance sparkles with a selection of arias and orchestral works that include excerpts from one of Garanca’s most celebrated roles, Bizet’s Carmen, and Marguerite in Berlioz’s Damnation of Faust. As well as providing world-class accompaniment, the Berlin Philharmonic makes a stirring contribution to the program with the overture to Berlioz’s thrilling Roman Carnival and excerpts from Manuel de Falla’s ballet, The Three-Cornered Hat.

The laus perennis that the monks every day in their psalmody offer to the Lord, is adorned with hymns, antiphons and responsories; all chants drawn from the ancient gregorian repertory. With this daily practice and custom, the monks become almost the only custodians and specialists of this patrimony of the highest religious, cultural and artistic merit that is gregorian chant. The monks of Montecassino – always faithful cultivators of this venerable chant, proper to the lit- urgy of the Church – with the present CD want to make these melodies, which are an elevated form of prayer, resound also outside of the monastery walls. The recording was completed at the Tomb of St. Benedict and is intended as an affectionate hymn of sons towards their father and master: in fact, a good part of the liturgy of the Solemnity of St.Benedict of the traditional date of March 21 was performed.

This programme reflects the full flavour and richness of English music and the instrumental and vocal repertory it inspired in Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The rhythmic impulse of this repertory sometimes making use of ostinato culminates in the grounds, jigs, contredanses and so on that were all the rage at the time and led to the publication of John Playford's collection The English Dancing Master in 1651. Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien, showing their familiarity with early sources from England, Scotland and Ireland, also emphasise the melodic aspect of these dances, which in the course of time became sung airs the soprano Fiona McGown and the baritone Enea Sorini complete a colourful instrumentarium. Finally, the light-hearted dimension of entertainment is present everywhere in this repertory, which was popular in the sense that it was universally practised at the time, achieving a fame that spread far beyond the British Isles.
