Not every movie soundtrack has to go as hard as it does. The best soundtracks exist outside of the movie, giving you all the feels without all the *drama.* It's like a specially curated mixtape (aka a playlist, duh) from your favorite movie to you. There's often that one, epic song that the movie's known for—the one that plays over the end credits and sends you out of the movie theater with a smile on your face—but then there are some hidden gems that maybe only got a few lines in the film but are utter bangers in their own right. Jim Jarmusch’s “Only Lovers Left Alive” is a great movie. It celebrates a certain vintage lifestyle, in which quality, deliberate slowness, and a love for nostalgia and the luxurious fight against the inevitability of greed and the fast pace of today’s world. However, there is only one weak scene: At the end of the film the two vampires Adam (Tom Hiddleston) and Eve (Tilda Swinton) are in Tanger and pass by a club in which the Lebanese singer Yasmine Hamdan is playing and the two protagonists get lost in the music. In this scene I wished Jarmusch had chosen a more interesting band instead of Hamdan’s rather insipid electro/world-music brew.

In late December 2015 a new David Bowie box set was announced that would be focused on his rise to rock stardom in the early 70’s. With the dawning of the new year, news that the music world feared came true, that Bowie had been seriously ill for years and had passed away. Like when most celebrities pass away, interest and demand for their output rises and it took me a bit of work to secure a copy of this box, in anticipation of its arrival I used the time to pour back over David’s back catalog of this era, from The Man Who Sold The World through Aladdin Sane as well as the few official live records, the brilliant Santa Monica 72 show, the Ziggy soundtrack, and the David Live were all in steady rotation.
