In 1607, Claudio Monteverdi premiered his Orfeo for the Carnival opening in the Court theatre of Duke Vincenzo I of Gonzaga in Mantua. For the first time in the history of music, real characters are brought to life with deeply moving human feelings: with this exceptional dramatic power, modern opera in born. Stéphane Fuget, a great specialist in this repertoire and its historical instrumentation, after Le Retour d’Ulysse dans sa Patrie, has brought together some of the finest vocal and instrumental virtuosos for this new Orfeo: he has entrusted the eponymous role to the splendid and sensitive Julian Prégardien, to sing all the magnificence of the first true hero in the history of opera.

1607 führte Claudio Monteverdi seinen Orfeo zur Eröffnung des Karnevals im Hoftheater des Herzogs Vincenzo I. von Gonzaga in Mantua auf. Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo - premiered in 1607 at the Ducal Palace in Mantua - is a unique masterpiece in its way of thinking and representing music that never ceases to inspire the greatest.Emiliano Gonzalez Toro, at the heart of his ensemble I Gemelli, signs his third recording for naïve with this luxuriant reading refocused around the voice, which exalts both the aesthetics inherited from the Renaissance and the modernity of a virtuoso score.This production, hailed on the stages of Paris and Toulouse at the end of 2019, has the singularity of being conducted ‘by the voice’ by the tenor, who plays the title role while directing singers and instrumentalists. Emiliano Gonzalez Toro displays his care - not only for himself but also for the ten soloists who surround him - with richly ornamented vocal lines that contrast in their dynamics and climates, always keeping the narration and interventions of the characters in tension.

Comme autrefois ceux de son défunt maître Michel Corboz qui lui a appris à « se méfier de trop d’intellect appliqué à la musique », les enregistrements de Leonardo García Alarcón sont très attendus. Cette nouvelle version de L’Orfeo de Monteverdi sous sa direction montre d’ailleurs clairement cette filiation, grâce à l’expression que le chef argentin insuffle à sa vision si opératique du chef-d’œuvre monteverdien qui n’est pas sans rappeler la lointaine version de Corboz, enregistrée en 1968 pour les disques Erato avec le lumineux Orfeo d’Éric Tappy.
