When Nathan Salsburg’s daughter was a baby, he often sang her to sleep in a rocking chair. At one point, he remembered a song he had taught himself as a teenager: “The Evidence” by Lungfish, the Maryland band who coined a singular brand of post-punk in the 90s and 00s. Salsburg realized he could play the guitar part with one hand, singing while holding Talya in his other arm. Though the original version of “The Evidence” is only five minutes long, it’s essentially a repetitive mantra, so Salsburg could extend it as long as he wanted–10 minutes, 20 minutes, even an hour. “It was therapeutic and calming and just lovely for me,” he says.

The second album of astonishing duets by guitarists James Elkington (who has toured and/or recorded with Jeff Tweedy, Richard Thompson, and Steve Gunn, among others) and Nathan Salsburg (an accomplished soloist deemed by NPR “one of those names we’ll all associate with American folk guitar”) is a sublime suite of nimble, filigreed compositions by two singular stylists. Belying its title—“ambsace” is the lowest throw of dice; snake eyes—the record thrives on a gentle empathy and generosity of spirit, sitting sneakily protean original compositions alongside gorgeous arrangements of songs by Duke Ellington and The Smiths at the same big hand-hewn table.

The duo's third album of instrumental guitar recordings pushes their sinuous compositions into labyrinthine new shapes, interlocking and interlocutory, supported by a cast of stellar collaborators. Interwoven among the dazzling original pieces is a fascinating array of covers, ranging from traditional Breton dance tunes to a deconstruction of Neneh Cherry's "Buffalo Stance." Their melody-first sensibilities are perfectly suited to each other… playfully complex guitar work that sounds as if it was tossed off in an afternoon of whiskey and laughs. - NPR - An intoxicating, intricate web… Wherever Salsburg and Elkington go, it's always a pleasure. - Aquarium Drunkard - Sounds like winter has always been approaching, like Indian summer never quite fades, like fall isn't built around loss. - Stereogum

Third is the stunning third album by Nathan Salsburg, one of his generation’s most gifted and idiosyncratic acoustic guitarists. It’s been ve years since his last solo record (Hard for to Win and Can’t Be Won, 2013) — but not because he hasn’t been playing guitar. In the intervening years he’s backed up Joan Shelley on three releases and several hundred live dates; put out a collection of guitar duets with multi-instrumentalist James Elking- ton; teamed up with fellow Louisvillian and neighbor Bonnie “Prince” Billy on an EP; and contributed playing to records by The Weather Station, Wooden Wand, Watter (what’s with the Ws?), Jake Fussell, and Red River Dialect.

We are proud to announce that the June 2021 issue of Uncut – in UK shops from April 15 – comes with one of the best free, covermounted CDs we’ve ever given away. To celebrate Bob Dylan's 80th birthday, 14 esteemed artists – including The Flaming Lips, Low, Richard Thompson, Courtney Marie Andrews, Cowboy Junkies and The Weather Station – have recorded brand new versions of classic Dylan songs exclusively for us. What's more, the CD also features a previously unreleased Dylan track! To reiterate – because we're still amazed about this ourselves – all these covers were recorded specifically for Uncut's free CD and are currently unavailable anywhere else.
