Edward Elgar (1857-1934) began his career as a professional violinist and became a composer quite by accident. In fact, his reputation as a composer only came in his mid 30s. He had planned to write a violin concerto as early as 1890, but it took nearly two decades before he finally completed one. Finally in 1910 he wrote his sole Violin Concerto fulfilling a request by Fritz Kreisler who once declared that he regarded Elgar to be ‘the greatest living composer…. on an equal footing with my idols, Beethoven and Brahms’.

60 years have passed since the release of a recording that would change Swedish jazz forever. Bill Evans, with his incredible touch and mastery of harmony has made an undeniable imprint on jazz musicians all over the world - and through his collaboration with Monica Zetterlund on "Waltz for Debby" in 1964, a new era for Scandinavian music was born.Impressions of Evans is an effort to pay tribute to this - a gesture of gratitude for making pine trees and 5th Avenue come together in a remarkably seamless, beautiful way and for being the perfect example of how one plus one sometimes equals three.

When Deutsche Harmonia Mundi released this disc of lieder by Schumann, Schubert, and Mendelssohn in 1994, it was considered a part of the historically informed performance practice movement because it featured performers closely associated with the movement. Prior to this release, tenor Christoph Prégardien was best known for his work with Gustav Leonhardt and Philippe Herreweghe, while fortepianist Andreas Staier made his mark playing continuo with Musica Antiqua Köln. Listening to the disc a decade later, however, the performances sound less like a memento of their time than like still vital artistic achievements.
