Illuminations is a 1974 collaboration between Alice Coltrane and Carlos Santana. For his third duet album, Carlos Santana performed the works of John Coltrane, paired with Coltrane's widow, harpist/keyboardist Alice Coltrane, on this instrumental album. Side One includes several contemplative, string-filled numbers, while Side Two presents Santana's re-creation of John Coltrane's late free jazz style in "Angel of Sunlight." Columbia Records could not have been pleased at Santana's determined drift into esoteric jazz: Illuminations was the first of the nine Santana-related albums so far released in the U.S. not to go gold.

2LP on 1SACD | Features Stereo and Quadrophonic Surround Sound | Label: Vocalion # CDLK 4594

This Andre Kostelanetsz SACD, beginning with colorful orchestral works by Portuguese-born Villa-Lobos. We have orchestral excerpts from the opera Magdalena and several other lovely pieces. Of particular interest is the imaginative Little Train of the Caipira with its colorful description of a little train chugging through the mountains. This is richly orchestrated, and engineers have separated instruments among the four channels very effectively. Bachianas Brasilieras No. 5 is truncated and it is unfortunate they didn't perform it with a soprano—after all, Marni Nixon was on the scene. The remainder is music of Spain featuring Maralin Nixon in several works, and the two short pieces by Pablo Casals are welcome. Audio is outstanding on this issue. Both LP from 1974, were to all intents and purposes demonstration discs, designed to show off quadraphonic sound.
Phoebe Snow - Phoebe Snow (1974) [APO Remaster 2014] SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

Phoebe Snow died at the age of 60, but her art will live forever. Her debut album witnesses a masterful nine-track lineup. Most of the songs were written by a 23-year old Phoebe Snow, including her best-known smash hit "Poetry Man. Snow was renowned for her elastic contralto and jazz scat vocals; this album became as legendary as her career, which spanned decades.

2 LP on 1 SACD | Features Stereo and Quadrophonic Surround Sound | Vocalion # CDSML 8552

A pair of very unusual albums – back to back on a single SACD! "Stolen Goods" is a totally cool, totally groovy album from the 70s – one that features large orchestral arrangements of themes from the classics – but all augmented with plenty of wild contemporary touches. Next up is "Viva Vivaldi", served up by Italian conductor Ettore Stratta – who you'll know from both sound track and easy instrumental modes – getting a lot of hip help here from arranger Chico O'Farrill.
