The story of how Mozart fell in love with the young singer Aloysia Weber, was dumped, and then married her younger sister Constanze is well known. The fact that a third sister, Josepha, figured in Mozart's career (and that the youngest sister, Sophia, remembered Mozart from her childhood) is less commonly appreciated. French soprano Sabine Devieilhe steps into the roles of Aloysia, Constanze, and Josepha here, making clear that all three must have been among the strongest sopranos of their time. She doesn't really try to differentiate among the voices of the three (which are at any rate unknowable), but all of them got powerhouse arias.

The Pointer Sisters' 13th charting LP, 1985's Contact, was an exercise in slick, edgy, synthesized pop. Both "Dare Me" and "Freedom," easily the best songs here, marched straight onto the singles charts. The former was an audacious, rough-and-ready come-on draped in a samba beat, wrapped in period trimmings, and brimming with sharp vocal harmonies. The latter, on the other hand, graced the R&B Top 30 with a quiet, soulful dream, riding a light beat and little instrumentation…

There are some lesser known Perry Como tracks available here and ballads such as: “Surprising” and “Give Me Your Hand”. Plus five tracks from The Fontane Sisters which have never been available on CD before including the popular “Candy Kisses” and “Look For The Silver Lining”.

The mere mention of the name the McGuire Sisters evokes images of '50s America and comfortable white, middle-class life and aspirations. Their work was the perfect musical embodiment of the popular culture of the period, of a piece with Snooky Lanson and Gisele MacKenzie on Your Hit Parade, and Dwight Eisenhower's America. They even came from a place called Middletown. Christine (b. 1929), Dorothy (b. 1928, d. 2012), and Phyllis (b. 1931) were from Middletown, Ohio, the daughters of Asa and Lillie McGuire. Lillie McGuire was an ordained minister, and the girls' first singing experiences were in church indeed, secular music was frowned upon in the household and they had to sneak the Andrews Sisters and other popular acts into their regular listening. They sang at weddings, funerals, and revival meetings, revealing a special knack for close harmony.
