Summer Night Concert 2013 with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Lorin Maazel, features the music of Verdi and Wagner in celebration of their bicentennial anniversaries. Recorded live on May 30, the program consists of beloved works by Verdi including the Triumphal March from Aida, "La mia letizia infondere" aria from I Lombardi, dances from Otello and the overtures from Luisa Miller and Forza del Destino. These pieces alternate with selections from Wagner's best known works including the Prelude to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, the Story of the Holy Grail from Lohengrin and the popular favorite "Ride of the Valkyries" from Die Walküre. With the UNESCO World Heritage setting of the Baroque park of Schönbrunn Palace as the backdrop, the Summer Night Concert adds stunning visuals to the superb musical program.
Lucia Popp (born Lucia Poppová) entered the Academy in Bratislava primarily to study drama. Her voice was a mezzo-soprano but her musical lessons developed a high upper register to such a degree that her professional debut was as Queen of the Night in Mozart’s opera Die Zauberflöte in Bratislava. In 1963 Otto Klemperer heard her and she duly recorded this role with him in 1971. Also in 1963 Herbert von Karajan invited her to join the State Opera in Vienna where her first role was Barbarina in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro.
The Summer Night Concert of The Vienna Philharmonic is the world's biggest annual classical open-air concert set in the magical Schönbrunn Palace Baroque park in Vienna. The concert will take place on 31 May 2018 and its theme for this year is 'An Italian Night'. The concert is broadcast on TV and radio in more than 60 countries, and thus reaches an audience of millions. The evening’s repertoire is an attractive combination of extremely popular works for orchestra including the William Tell Overture, the March from the opera Aida and the Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, as well as famous Soprano arias like Vissi d’arte, vissi d‘amore from the Opera Tosca. Valery Gergiev returns to conducts the Summer Night Concert and is joined by star Soprano Anna Netrebko in what promises to be one of the most popular concerts this year!
