Thomas Quasthoff was a thalidomide baby, growing to only about four feet tall and, in common with many of his fellow victims of the drug, has severely undeveloped arms. However, his voice and breathing apparatus are normal – if a bass-baritone voice that is uncommonly magnificent can be considered normal. When Quasthoff reached school age, he was assigned, according to government policy, to school programs designed for children with cerebral palsy. A lively, intelligent, and artistic child, Quasthoff clearly needed the stimulation of normal schooling, which a change in policy soon permitted.

With A Romantic Songbook, Thomas Quasthoff attempts to re-create the spirit of a live recital in a studio recording. It certainly looks like a recital program: an assortment of lieder composers, each represented by a handful of favorite songs, with a few unfamiliar numbers thrown in to keep things interesting. There's even an encore – the traditional "Danny Boy." With the exception of Schumann's Belsatzar, the bass-baritone hasn't recorded any of these songs before, and, in fact, this is his first recording to include any songs by Mendelssohn, Carl Loewe, or Richard Strauss. This stylistic variety gives the album a breezy, cheerful disposition that matches Quasthoff's personality.

From the instant that Thomas Quasthoff began his first Verbier Festival performance in 2003, the incomparable bass-baritone knew that he had arrived at his musical home. Nearly twenty years later, this sublime debut — an assortment of orchestrated Schubert lieder — opens a release that highlights Quasthoff’s incredible musicality against backdrops of instrumental accompaniment. Gustav Mahler’s ‘Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen’ (Songs of a Wayfarer), followed by J.S. Bach’s ‘Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen’ round out this highly-anticipated offering from Verbier Festival Gold.
Listen to the first pre-release track of Thomas Quasthoff singing one of Schubert’s most popular songs “Ständchen” from Schwanengesang, in a light, fluid and instrumentally colorful orchestral version by Jacques Offenbach. The world-renowned baritone releases an album of orchestral songs, performed at Verbier Festival, on October 28.

It's the late Vier ernste Gesänge, Op. 121, that get the big print on the cover of this release by the awe-inspiring baritone Matthias Goerne, but actually the music on the album falls into a neat early-middle-late classification scheme. The group of middle-period settings of poetry by Heinrich Heine doesn't even get graphics on the cover, but these are fascinating. Brahms wrote a lot of songs, but you couldn't do better than the selection and performances here for a cornerstone collection item. Beyond the sheer beauty of Goerne's voice is an ability to shift gears to match how Brahms' style evolved. If you want to hear his real slashing, operatic high notes, check out the Lieder und Gesänge, Op. 32, settings of poems by the minor poets Georg Friedrich Daumer and Karl August Graf von Platen. These rather overwrought texts add up to a kind of slimmed-down Winterreise, and they catch the spirit of the still-young Brahms with his strong passions, elegantly controlled. The Heine settings, which come from several different sets of lieder, are not that often heard and are in some ways the most compelling of the group here.
